Firmware 2.50 thoughts and experiences

I haven't received the update yet but the release notes compel me to start the inevitable FW update thread.

First: Thanks for adding a Trail Run activity! I thought that a rather silly omission for a running specific watch.

Second: What does "Changes to Support Factory" mean?

I'm also waiting for the update....

However 'changes to support factory' is most likely some behind the scenes firmware updates to support manufacturing and automated testing prior to shipping. All devices will go through quality control tests and checks (mostly automated) and they will just be tweaking parameters and possibly code as their manufacturing lines come on-line, ramp up manufacuring and they get better data. nothing for us users to worry about....
  • That makes as much sense as anything but as you say its not something that really impacts the user so why mention it in the release notes? It could've just been included in the general "other fixes" at the end.

I'm not really concerned. Just thought it was odd bullet point.
  • Got the update today. It was different than any other update I have gotten on a Garmin Device as I did not acknowledge it, and I did not have to do anything to update, it was just there on the watch when I looked telling me it was updated to 2.5. Wonder if this is what Support Factory is, when you have Auto Update selected, it just updates in the background.
  • I've only been able to update via Garmin Express. That goes for 2.40 when I got my watch on Monday and 2.50 yesterday. I also have to keep "auto update" off, otherwise I see a never-ending, never progressing "Sending Software Update" message in the Devices section of Garmin Connect (Google Pixel XL running Android 8.1 with the March security updates). I left it running for 4 hours on Monday evening and got fed up and used my computer to update.

I don't have any real experience with the device prior to 2.50 to comment on or compare to because when I got my watch it was my rest day, so yesterday was my first day running with it. I had no issues with the watch on my run.

Edit: Today I turned auto update back on and haven't had the "Sending Software Update" message get stuck again.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1324918.png

That means it's happening but at the BT speeds can take quite some time (hours). If you're seeing that, it means it will finish at some point.

Even being (presumably) fully up-to-date (2.50 and Sensor Hub 6.10), as soon as I turn auto update on, it goes right back to that status. Is there something else that could be updating that I'm not just not thinking of?
  • If you have Auto-update on and a functional Wifi setup does it still prioritize BT over Wifi? Seems kind of silly to prefer a slower data transfer stream over a faster one when both are available.
  • My update is showing on garmin express, but when it tries it download it on my watch, it tells me the memory is full ?????

If you are on a PC can you open the Forerunner 645 drive and see how much free space is available in the Primary drive?

Do you see any GUPDATE.GCD files in the Garmin folder?
