FR645 or FR935

I currently have the Vivoactive HR. I upgraded shortly to the VA 3, found out quickly that it was not going to work for my marathon training & speed work outs. I do a lot of cross training, cross fit type work outs, that is why I had the VA HR. It worked out pretty good, but I wanted more info from my runs. I also really wanted a watch with sound as a run/walker who loves running with my friend who has a Garmin with an audible beep for her intervals. I want to upgrade my VA HR, I ordered the FR935 and it's on it's way actually...but I am debating on returning it like the VA 3 and waiting for this watch, minus the music. I don't plan on any tri's in the near future, I did a duathalon & was fine with just switching activities.
Is there any major reasons why I would choose to keep the 935 over the 645??
  • If you replace x-country skiing with kayaking and strength training my needs are the same as yours and don't feel like I'll be missing out on anything by going to the 645 instead of the 935.

The only thing missing that jumps to mind based on what you say your needs are is if you use a power meter for your outdoor cycling. Otherwise as long as you like the size and look of the 645 it should fill your needs.
  • Power meter support for cycling can always be added with a bespoke Connect IQ data field as long as the power meter operates on ANT+ and not BLE. If one doesn't exist yet (haven't looked in the store) it won't be too complicated to write one.

Sounds good, thanks - yeah, my cycling needs are not that serious at all. Unlike all the metrics I use from the 935's running capabilities, with cycling and yoga I just like tracking the calorie burn, for the most part; the only reason I cycle at all is it's decent cross training to running, but also, she cycles a ton due to her tris so it's just another fun thing to do together (even if the bar we hit in between negates a lot of the calories burned!).

Sounds like you would be fine with the 645 then and your partner will love you even more!

    She better, LOL!

good point - had not thought of that. I can't see any such field as yet however and would be potentially useful for 230/235/630 users although I tend to think if you have a power meter you must already have a device than can read it.
  • Reasons to go with the 645:
    - smaller size
    - YOU like the looks better
    - less money
    - music
    - need to charge on the go while wearing
    - don't care about golf
    - don't care about bike power
    - don't care about outdoor swimming

Unless one of those is a requirement, go with the 935. It seems to be being treated as a higher end device so is more likely to get Garmin love with updates.

To the best of my knowledge, the only features the 935 is missing is music and Garmin Pay
  • I really wanted the 935 but it's far too large for my wrist. Reading through here and other places, it looks like I'll deal with the lack of bike/power meter support and am planning to get a 645 (w/o music).
  • According to the Spec Pages on Garmin website on native support:

Fitness Equipment/Gym: 645 additionally includes: Elliptical Training, Stair Stepping, Floor Climbing, Yoga
Running: 645 states Treadmill Running, Indoor Track vs 935 states: Indoor Running, Trail Running
Outdoor Recreation: 935 additionally has: Hiking, Climbing, Jumpmaster, Tactical
Cycling: 935 additionally has: Mountain Biking
Swimming: 935 additionally has: Pool Swimming

For me and the type of exercise I do I would prefer to have native support for Elliptical Training and Yoga.

    Alex

Edit: Realize that the Garmin Website spec pages on the 935 are incorrect. Firmware 7.00 added elliptical, stair, floors climbed, and yoga activities to the 935

    Main reasons:
    .) FR645 has no WiFi, no tempature-measurement, no altitude-measurement
    .) FR645 has no touchscreen

The 645 does have a temperature corrected barometer so that is incorrect. It will have temp and altitude.
Is wifi even a thing? I guess if you don't have a smart phone it would be a perk but otherwise it's not needed.
  • As my post above is unapproved I’ll repeat. The 645 has Wifi. See the Garmin specs on the buy page on the webpage (link will be above when approved)
