Distance Significantly Underestimated for Walk Activities Without GPS

Earlier today I did a GPS tracked 5km walk. Pace was 8min/km and based on the number of steps counted my stride length was approximately 80cm. Later in the day I did two shorter walks with GPS disabled. The estimated distance was around 50% of the actual distance. Based on the number of steps, a stride length of 45cm was being used for the distance calculations. I did another 5km walk using the exact same route I had used earlier in the day, except this time with GPS disabled. The time it took to complete the walk was almost identical to the previous walk, so I know my pace was the same. But the watch reported a pace of 24min/km and the distance was way off...again a 45cm stride length appears to have been used in the distance calculation.

Is there a way to reset the watch to correct the stride length being used to estimate distance for walk activities? I've entered a custom stride length of 80cm. But the watch is ignoring the custom value and using 45cm instead.

  • Hi,

The option is availabe through Garmin Connect (Web).

Select your device, go to Activity tracking, then at the bottom of the page.

    bye,

  • Let me clarify the last point of my original post. I already set the custom stride length in the Garmin Connect (web) app as 0.8m (80cm). I did that when I got the FR45 a year ago.

I have done hundreds of walk activities since then, and the FR45 has never used the custom stride length to estimate distance for those activities. Based on the distance estimated and the steps counted for each activity, up until yesterday the FR45 has been using a stride length of 65 to 75cm to estimate distance. That was close enough, so I wasn't too concerned about it. But the recent development where the FR45 is using a stride length of 45cm to estimate distance for walk activities is not acceptable.

I did two walk activities again today without GPS enabled, and the distance is significantly underestimated again. I'm fairly certain something got screwed up when I did the GPS tracked walk yesterday, and I am looking for suggestions on how to correct/reset the stride length the FR45 is using for walk activities.

  • Thanks for all your explanation, the best solution is to contact Garmin Support to explain your conclusion and behaviour.

Garmin should consider it because it should be easily reproducible.
