Forerunner 45: my favourite activities are not choosable

Dear garmin owners! I got a garmin forerunner 45 as a christmas gift from my girlfriend. When I looked up the available activities, i had to find out that many of my favorite activites, such as ski touring, ice skating, swimming, calisthenics and hiking are not included. I also had to find out, that it is not possible to activate these activites on my watch. Would it be a better idea for me to buy another garmin watch and if yes which one? Or can i choose one of the installed activities for my activites mentioned before and if yes, which in which case? Thank you very much for your help! Cheers Stephan

  • Or can i choose one of the installed activities for my activites mentioned before and if yes, which in which case?

You did not mention what activities are available on your model. If you want to get the complete list quickly for posting it here, connect the watch with the USB cable and copy the listing of the folder //GARMIN/Sports

Otherwiser, you can also use for example the following substitutions:

    • Hiking - is available on most models, but it is not on the FR45, use the Walk
    • Ski touring - you can use any of the activities that you find show the best information on the default screens (or you can customize them): Cycling, Run, Hike, Walk,
    • Ice skating - same as above
    • Swimming - in case of pool swimmg choose an indoor activity profile such as cardio or treadmill, in case of open water swimming choose an oudoor activity such as Run or Walk. However, the HRM, and the GPS may not work properly.
    • Calisthenics - use the Strength or Cardio profiles

You can change the type of the activity to the appropriate one, once synced, in Garmin Connect.

If you want a different watch model supporting swimming directly, have a look at the list of Garmin devices compatible with swimming: SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING

    Hey trux!

Thanks for your fast and informative answer! The activities i can choose from are running, treadmill, cycling, indoor cycling, walking, indoor walking, crosstraining, stepper, yoga, indoor railway, cardio and other ("sonstige" in german).

So how do you mean i could customitze the activities? I didnt see any way how to change them. Or do you mean i just choose an activity which is gps tracking me, like walking, when i am going on a skitour, and then, after the tour, i change my activity afterwarda in the ap from walking to skitouring?

And what would you be choosing when you are skiing? Or would you change it afterwards the same way like mentioned above in the skitour?

Thank you very much for helping!

Have a great evening! Cheers Stephan

Most Garmin watches allow you to create a Custom Activity profile when you select the option "Other". Mostly they allow you also to add a custom profile based on another Activity type, already present on your watch. I am not familiar with the FR45 though, so I do not know whether (and how exactly) it offers that possibility too.

When not possible, simply use any activity you find suitable, and that offers screens that you find usefull. Outdoors profiles like Run, Walk, Hike, Cycling,.. for outdoor activities, and Cardio, Indoor Cycling, Treadmill, Yoga,... for indoor activites not requiring any GPS tracking. Other than that, it is not really important what you choose. You can change the type to a better suiting one later in Garmin Connect.

Ok so I tried to customitze the profile "other" but it didnt have any other options than the other activities from which i can choose from. So I am just going to choose the most suitablr activity and change the profile afterwards in the app. There is just one more thing for me to know: do the burned calories also change when i change the activity profile afterwards? That would be great, because otherwise i would not know how efficient my activity was.

Thank u so much for helping me out!

    Cheers Stephan

  • do the burned calories also change when i change the activity profile afterwards?

The Calories burned during a workout are completely independent on the type of the activity you choose. The only parameters that matter, are the heart rate and the heart rate variabilty (besides the personal data like the weight, heigth, age, gender, and the activity class). Hence, there is no reason to change the Calories when you change the activity name - the increased effort is measured with the HR / HRV in real-time, and the name of the activity you just do has absolutely no impact on it (and that's the right way).

    Ok perfect!

So in the end i can track any acitivty perfectly with my forerunner 45 and there is no need to get another watch Slight smile

Thank you very much! U really helped me a lot! I wish u a nice evening! Cheers Stephan

  • To be more precise, in case of open water swimming and activity "Walk" (even with "Other" with GPS+GALILEO). I would not say that "the GPS may not work properly". The GPS does not track movement at all.

Is there any "technical reason" for that, e.g. positions of the FR45 while swimming and functioning of accelerometer?

Because, I assume that 20 cm of water should not be a problem for the GPS signal...

Anyway, FR45 should not be advertised for swimming.

  • Because, I assume that 20 cm of water should not be a problem for the GPS signal...

Even 5 cm of water will be a problem. GPS is a very low-power high-frequency signal, and it is absorbed perfectly by water.
