Forerunner 45 taking ages to get GPS lock

I am shocked to read how many people have issues with Garmin watches taking forever to get a GPS lock on this forum; especially since GPS is probably the number one function why people buy these watches.

I frequently have to wait 5-10 minutes or longer, even have to cancel the power saving mode that the watch wants to go in while waiting for GPS. I've tried all the suggestions here:

- Frequent sync with the companion app

- Software updates

- Making sure I have a clear view to the sky

- Reboot the watch multiple times

- Tried various GPS settings

- Delete the file on the watch as suggested in other threads

Nothing helped. It's very frustrating if you want to go out and exercise and have to wait 10 minutes for the bloody watch to finally know where we are. I'm at a point that I'm recommending everyone in our running group to avoid Garmin like the plague because of this.

Just wanted to voice this out here in case you are considering a Garmin watch. I spent a fair bit of money on something that doesn't do more for me than showing what time it is. Very disappointed in Garmin, and even worse to see this seems a very common issue with Garmin watches, including some of my friends' watches.

  • I have my FR45 since February this year and I always get the GPS lock within 10 seconds. So most probably it's a malfunction in your device. Repair it or replace it under warranty, if it's still available.

  • Check other threads in this room. Most likely it is the firmware 3.90 that has bugs. Is your watch running this version?  What is the CPE file status under the "About" menu?

You may try syncing with your laptop using Garmin Express as this apparently updated the CPE file status.

  • Why no reaction from Garmin (it's definitely an issue).

    Many people are complaining!

I've been having the same issue my watch is not showing that a GPS single is acquired.  I just hit start key and it seems to work - most of the time as long as I wait 15 seconds,  I've got in the habit of turning it on in the house while putting on shoes and hit start at end of driveway.
