Forerunner 45 Series 3.80

I now seem to be on software version 3.80.

Trying to upload a new workout directly via Garmin Express and a USB cable was unsuccessful, but it did sync to the Garmin Connect app and from there to the watch. I've no idea whether the software update had anything to do with this. No other issues so far.

It's all gone very quiet here! I'm glad Garmin seems to have recovered from the recent massive outage.

  • I updated to 3.80 this morning. Looks and operates the same, do we know what the update includes?

  • Updated to 3.80 as well. Only via Garmin express.

  • Also updated to 3.80 through automatic update. My watch lost connectivity with my cellphone and I had to re-pair...

No idea what has changed, but GPS seems a bit crazier than the normal inside closed places -- instead of keeping paused, it was unpausing and pausing every 1min or so.

Also, for the first time, the abnormal HR warning (set to 100 bpm) was triggered. No idea why!

  • I updated too and heart rate was little off than older version.. and the battery seems to run faster... Anyone know the changelog ?

  • Based on a couple of runs, plus background HR monitoring, I've not noticed any differences. I've felt for a while that battery life is not as good as it used to be (and less good than my old FR35), but nothing I could blame on this update. Former Member, are you there? A changelog would be nice! What happened to 3.70?

  • After two runs when everything seemed OK, on the third time out I was back to the old problem of activity screens showing the wrong fields, e.g. speed where I had previously shown pace. I have not figured out any logic on what causes this change. Resetting all the activity fields manually seems to fix it until the next software update. But why on earth does the problem appear some time later, and not immediately after the update? The miles/km bug, which was supposed to have been fixed some time ago, is also still there.

I like my FR45 but there's no way I would buy another, or recommend it to anyone else. I can't think of any device I've ever bought that has given so much grief – and I seem to be one of the lucky ones.

  • With my previous Forerunner 35, and now my Forerunner 45, I've noticed that when setting the data fields from the Connect iOS app, it never syncs down to the watch. So I went and setup the fields, etc. all from the watch itself and have never had an issue with them changing on me.

  • That's interesting. But for many months now I've been making the settings directly on the watch, because I have an Android phone and unless I'm being really stupid the option to set data fields in the app has disappeared. I'm sure it used to be possible in Android, but I used to use the iOS app and perhaps I'm thinking of that one instead. Where do you set the data fields in iOS?

  • As mentioned, setting fields within the iOS app never seemed to sync down to the watch, so I ended up doing it on the watch itself.

In the iOS app, hmm I no longer see a way to set the data fields anymore.

  • OK, so I'm probably not imagining things! As long as it worked, using the app was certainly a lot easier than fiddling around with the buttons on the watch. Based on your experience we might guess that Garmin removed this facility precisely because it didn't work, though it's hard to imagine why that was.

Anyway, as I said, for me the data fields seem to stick once they've been set explicitly. But at some random time after each software update they tend to change. If no-one else is seeing this it might depend on the exact number and/or arrangement of the screens.
