CPE does not update on syncing with Garmin Connect

I have experienced long wait times for my watch to acquire a GPS signal (GPS+GLONASS) and after looking up problem have found that the CPE has expired. However, syncing regularly with my phone and Garmin Connect does not fix the issue.

I am unable to download and use Garmin Express, so I have not tried this as a potential solution. Are there any other methods I can try to update the CPE?

  • Syncing with Garmin Express is the fix. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express/windows/

Resetting your watch to factory defaults would be the alternative. What is the problem with downloading GE?

  • I heard from the tech team that you can update CPE if you wait for at least 2 minutes just after the 'waiting for GPS' screen (before starting a new activity).

I have a Linux machine. I'll see if I can get access to a Windows/Mac to download and run GE

I'll give this a go too. Thanks

  • As mentioned on Garmin's support site "If you have an expired EPO on your watch, syncing with Garmin Express should be your first step to updating your EPO data."

Also, "If syncing does not update your EPO, you will need to restore the EPO file," which involves deleting the folder \Garmin\RemoteSW from the watch. After syncing with Garmin Express, the RemoteSW and EPO file will be copied to the watch.

If having access to a Windows/Mac machine is too difficult, there is evidence that there has been some success with using wine. There's a yt video if you search "Garmin Express on Linux | Wine Setup and Configuration." No confirmation on whether or not this is a viable solution. Maybe you're up for the "challenge." Wink

Good luck and please let us know how it goes. Thumbsup

  • Start an activity with GPS on, put the watch outside without any movement with good sight to open sky, and wait for about 15-20 minutes. Stop and delete activity, CPE file will be current.

Yes, I find using wine is a good temporary solution to many of my problems! Grin

  • I tested on my Garmin Instict Solar

I left it on a table, for 10 minutes

after that, CPE was updated! (even indoor, it works)

  • Just synced with Garmin Express and that didn't help. The CPE file has expired. I've never been able to get the Garmin Instinct Solar 2 to get the satellites correctly, and just doing a simple run around the block is off by a kilometer. This watch kind of sucks.

  • To me it seems: When synching your watch with Garmin Connect, you have to grant permission to the watch to “show notifications”. After I had granted the permission, the file was update. I usually don't care about the notifications and ignore the permission request. I assume it includes rights to write to the watch, i.e. transfer a file.
