Forerunner 45 won't start a run

My Forerunner 45 has had issues for 2-3 months now. At first, it would not start runs. I would hit the run button, wait for GPS signal, hit the button again, and the watch would display the normal running screen except the timer would not be moving. The only way I could fix it was to reset the settings or reset the whole watch, but those turned out to be temporary fixes. After doing it a few times, the watch wouldn't start runs no matter what. During the time that resetting the watch was working, it would delete runs before I had a chance to upload them.

What I have found out from looking through posts and contacting support is that my watch's software is out of date (version 2.60). My understanding is that the current version is 3.40, so clearly my automatic updates (which I never turned off) were NOT working in the Garmin Connect app. Support told me to get Garmin Express, but when I plug my watch into the computer (a Microsoft Surface Book 2) it makes the "device connected" sound, waits about 10 seconds, and makes the "device disconnected" sound. When I open Garmin Express, it will not detect my watch.

This means I can't get my watch to update through the computer, so I tried to get the Garmin Connect app to update it, but that is 100% "automatic" and I can't find any way to force an update.

I am not sure what to do, this watch is coming up on being a year old; I got it last summer, probably in July. Hopefully someone has a miracle solution on here or I can figure out how to get a replacement.

It seems like people have a LOT of issues with the Forerunner 45, which sucks because I had the 35 and it worked great for 4+ years (still works, too, I've been using it as my backup). None of the issues seem to be exactly the same, but if they have the same cause I hope Garmin figures it out.

Same for me.  Hit start after GPS kicks in and the watch tells me time/pace, then an alarm rings and I get a series of numbers at the bottom of the screen.  It then goes to Resume/Save/Delete and then the watch switches off.  I've been on the phone and had email exchanges with support staff, but I don't think they know what to do.  The watch works okay for Walk, Treadmill and Indoor Bike.

I've only had this turkey a few weeks and I'm about to return for a refund.  Not impressed.

I had the EXACT same problem and managed to 'fix' it. It was caused by the storage space on the device being full (it is only 10mb). I plugged it into my computer, found the drive (as you would any external storage), went to a folder within the drive called 'temp' and deleted all of the files in that folder. Those temp files had maxed out the storage. Once I'd done that, everything worked again - including starting activities, software updates and using Garmin Express. Not clear whether I'll have to do this again in the future. I hope the software updates have fixed this problem. Hope this works for you too.

Thanks for the reply.  I don't think that was the problem for me as it would still record other activities.  I contacted Garmin Support and worked through a number of potential fixes.  None worked and they swapped the watch for a new one that works perfectly.  Have to say that I was most impressed by the service from Support.  The bloke on the other end of the phone really went the extra mile and a half to resolve the problem--including ringing the store to arrange the swap.

I was having the exact same problem and this fixed it.  Thank you!

  • I tried this on my watch because it had the exact same issue. However, once I got into it I did a search and there was no file called "temp". I found a file called "temp it" and deleted that. Is it the same thing?
