Forerunner 45 pace estimate seems wildly inaccurate.

I was forced to upgrade recently from my trusty FR25 (which did a pretty good job of estimating pace) when it started losing runs and refusing to upload to my PC. I got the 45 and while I'm mostly happy with it, the pacing is all over the place. One minute it will say I'm running 11:30 min/mi, then 9:45, then something else, and when the mile finally ends it'll be something different again. It is making it very hard for me to hit the paces I need as part of my marathon training.
I did read the online manual but it left me none the wiser. Is there any way to get a more consistent pace for the mile I'm in?

  • For what it's worth, my FR 45 GPS also seemed inconsistent for about three weeks, but it seems to have become more consistent. The advice I read is to sync frequently, which allows more accurate satellite data to download to the watch.

  • Thanks. I do sync it every day (I use a PC rather than a phone).

  • I just had the same issue with my new FR45.  Pace was showing significantly slower than what it felt like I was running.  It showed I was running slower than my target pace, so each time I checked it, I ratcheted up my effort to run faster.  Strangely, the pace kept getting SLOWER until I was damn near sprinting.

I reviewed the data in Training Peaks (which will allow me to view each individual data point) and it was jumping all over the place.  I contacted Garmin Support and was told to get a picture of the watch when I am having the issue.  I told them that's pretty tough to do when I am running at a crazy hard pace.

Like you, I am relying on this device for interval training, and am afraid it's not going to be any better than using my phone, which I was doing before buying the FR45 and had too many data gaps.

I’m having the same problem.  Current pace displayed is clearly wrong almost all of the time, but once finished the recorded times are accurate. When I’m doing a training programme it will alert me that I’m going too fast and show the correct pace within the alert, and then it will go back to the display screen showing some wildly incorrect pace. It’s really annoying. Annoying enough that i think i will claim a refund.  Very disappointing.....
