Unable to receive notifications from phone.

I've not been able to receive notifications from my android phone even though Bluetooth connection is established and during activity and out of activity notifications have been turned on and app permissions on android phone have all been granted.

How do I turn them on  ?

    I've only had my 45S two days.  I'm not an expert but I just got notifications working.  

    My android phone has App settings which allow me to select the apps I want to receive notifications from.  I assume this also affects what the watch can receive.

    The Connect app on the phone has "Settings/Smart Notifications" that can apparently further limit what apps will communicate with your watch. (Nice.)

    And the watch itself under the Phone widget has settings to turn notifications on and off, as you know.

    I thought I had all this set properly for notifications from the android calendar and text messages, but neither worked until I noticed my phone had a notification from the Connect app requesting another permission.  Unfortunately I didn't note what that permission was, but thereafter notifications started working from these two sources.

    The calendar widget worked for me initially, so I was confident that bluetooth communication with the phone was functioning properly.
