Garmin connects to other peoples Heart rate monitors

Hi,

I have a Garmin forerunner 35. On a couple of occasions, at races, it automatically pairs to other peoples heart rate monitor devices at the start, and then when they are out of range it just gives me a flat heart rate reading from the point it can’t pick them up anymore.

how can I stop it doing this? I can’t even find an option on the watch to attach to an external heart rate monitor so I don’t understand how it is just pairing with other peoples devices uninvited - I didn’t even think this was possible with bluetooth!

this year, it has done this at 3 out of 5 races so far

thanks in advance for any ideas

  • it automatically pairs to other peoples heart rate monitor devices at the start,

What makes you think so? Is there a message on the FR35 that says that a heart rate monitor has been paired?

and then when they are out of range it just gives me a flat heart rate reading from the point it can’t pick them up anymore.

In that case the watch would rather revert to the built-in optical sensor, so I believe your issue is of totally different nature.

I can’t even find an option on the watch to attach to an external heart rate monitor

    It's described in the manual.

I didn’t even think this was possible with bluetooth!

It is impossible with bluetooth. The FR35 does not support bluetooth sensors. It does however support ANT+ sensors.

  • Hi, thanks for your reply.

yes it says ‘HR monitor connected’ after I press the ‘run outdoor’ option in activities. It has never done this when I’m on my own.

to the second point, unfortunately it doesn’t revert to the in built one and instead just stays at whatever the last reading was. I’ll attach an example screenshot of when this has happened, in case that helps.

thanks, is there anyway to turn ANT sensors off?

  • Ok, then there's something weird going on. The watch should not connect to external sensors on its own. And heart rate should not remain flat as soon as the sensor disconnects.

I don't have my FR35 anymore, but all external sensors are managed somewhere in the settings.
