Steps not included in 'walk' activity (but activity tracking set to on)

Hello,

This morning I walked to the station from home, a nice little 4.67km stroll. However when I arrived at my destination I was surprised to see that I had managed to do that walk with only a few hundred steps!

The activity appears to have synced to my device as I can see it on "My Day", however the steps haven't (I have a Forerunner 35). I'd expect about 4500-5500 steps depending on stride length for that distance, not 400 (which I'm assuming I walked before leaving the house).

Normally I wouldn't mind, but as 12,500 steps = maximum points on my vitality life insurance, it's actually extremely frustrating that 40-50% of that goal has been lost.

When you use walk mode, I'm assuming it should still count steps when activity tracking is on? (like the running mode does).

Therefore, was this just a bug / glitch? Is there something I can do? Just seems strange to have the activity but not the steps.

Many thanks in advance!
  • Your assumption that the watch should count steps when in walk mode is correct.

What were you doing with your arms during the walk? The watch will detect steps only when it is subject to rhytmic motion, like swinging your arms while walking. If - for example - you were pushing a cart or stroller, or kept your hands in your pockets, then the step counting mechanism could have failed.

Hi tmk2, thank you for the swift response!

Glad I'm not going mad on my assumption.

Except for holding a bag for a minute, my arms were free and swinging! When I shop I make sure my watch wrist isn't pushing the trolley for that very reason. So I don't think that was the cause sadly.

    Kind Regards
