Why it takes so long to start running mode in outdoors? Sometimes i have run almost 800 meters and clock is still thinking! That means my stats misses my first 800m :( When you are running for example -15C weather you cant just stand still and wait.
A 'normal' GPS would take more or less time to capture enough satelite signal depending on any of these:
- clear view to the sky (meaning, if you're in between tall buildings, close to cliffs or under trees, or if the sky is cloudy, it will take longer than if you're at the beach on a sunny day) ;
- if the last time the GPS was on you were many kms away (say 30, 100, 500) from where you are now, it may take quite some time to 'learn' the new location;
I know it will take time to get GPS signal, so I set the run outdoor mode and have the watch looking for HR and GPS in advance.
My suggestion is you put the 35 looking for GPS signal 5-10 minutes before you plan to start running. Like while you are driving to the place you'll be running, or before warming up.
Or try selecting "outdoor running" option and leaving the watch out the window of your house while you're getting dressed to go running (don't know if this will actually work, as it will also be searching for your heart rate? Will it search for GPS if it doesn't find HR? Can one disable this?)
Despite all my recomendations, above, yesterday it happened to me:
I run ~3-4 kms and the FR35 never picked up GPS signal.
The sky was cloudy and I was running inside the city. We don't have very tall buildings here, and I was running on a wide avenue, so view to the sky by the GPS was OK.
Last time I used the watch to run I was 5 kms away from the place I run yesterday.
Are you waiting to get a GPS lock before you start running? You should not need 5 - 10 minutes, but you do need to allow time for it to locate satellites when it is stationary before you start moving.
No, I hit the training mode button as I was going downstairs in to the street and the watch showed the "wait" screen until the end of the run, ~15/20 minutes later.
It showed the energy save mode display once or twice in between. At one point the watch showed 4 of the 5 satelite signal bars filled.
I have done this before (start running before the GPS locks on satelite signal), but it never took so long to get a fix.
Go outside, and wait while the device locates satellites.
This is the same instruction for all Garmin GPS devices. If it's cold, put it outside while you get ready, or put it on a window so that it can get connected.
My wife and I train together, both have FR35 , my watch locks on in a few seconds, max about 15 my wifes can take a km before it lock on. That is even if we are starting from the same place we ended the day before ...
You should start running before you get a lock. Swinging your arm will mean the lock takes longer. If you use your watch more than your wife's it will lock quicker. Maybe 'soak' the watch on a windowsill ahead of running for 5 minutes then you won't have to wait.
