"Software Update" is displaying on my device screen and I can't remove it or display anything else. Please help.
  • Same happened to me. Try to restart watch (press and hold Light button until it turns off, then press again to turn it on) then follow instructions for updating from software version 2.70 to 2.80

Mine did the same thing until I followed the link posted in the last reply. (I was freaking out a little last night until I found the post.)

I just reconnected my watch to my computer as a mass drive and the frozen screen disappeared. I followed the directions in the link about downloading the .zip file and extracting, then replacing it in your Garmin folder (overwrite the existing file).

It will take a couple of minutes for the watch to update after you disconnect it, but it works smoothly after that.

Getting software notification in the middle of the night, wakes me up with vibration

Any way to turn off software update notification that goes off in the middle of the night while on my wrist?

I have followed all the instructions and downloaded the zip file, but cannot extract the GUPDATE.RGN file. Every computer I try says it cannot recognise the rgn file type and can't open the file. Searching for ways to open rgn files only brings up dodgy software downloads that you have to pay for. How do you extract the GUPDATE.RGN file?

    Cannot extract GUPDATE.RGN file

I have a Forerunner 35 that has version 2.70 software installed. I have followed the instructions provided on how to fix the issue of the software update freezing, but cannot get past step 2 which is to extract the GUPDATE.RGN . My computer and every other I have tried does not recognise an .rgn file. How do you extract the file? I have wasted literally days trying to sort this out and am about to take the watch back to the store I bought it at and demand they return it to Garmin and fix it. Goodbye watch for probably months....

After you click the zip file you should be able to see the RGN file in your Downloads folder on your computer. Once you locate the file you can drag and drop it to your desktop. This will allow you to easily find it and then drag and drop it into the Garmin folder on your Forerunner 35.

There is not any extra software that is required to read or obtain the file from the attachment. If you are still having trouble you may want to contact Product Support in your area.

Thanks, success finally. I had obviously tried that previously, as when I dragged it across it said the file already existed. But I replaced it and it worked this time - watch finally on version 2.80.

Once you have the RGN file and the Forerunner 35 connected to the computer do the following to complete the update:

    • Open the device as a mass storage unit
    • Place the GUPDATE.RGN file in the Garmin folder
    • Safely disconnect the device from you computer
    • Allow the update to install

Unfortunatelly the file can't be downloaded. Is there any alternative or backup?

(update: my fault, I was not logged in. Now it works.)
