garmin 235 accuracy

Lately my garmin 235 has been extremely innacurate. one recent example: i ran a flat course of 10km and it claimed a 450 meter ascent, average HR of 87 (not possible), one of the km was marked at 4:15 pace (no way), recovery time was posted at 1 hour and calories burned at 261 (usually my 10ks are esimated to burn between 700-800 calories). this has been happening fairly often in the past month or so. any ideas? i checked my user profile, my age weight and activity (running) are all entered in correctly.

  • The 235 doesn't have a barometric alitmeter and relies on GPS altitude, which can be horribly inaccurate. This is why it is recommended to use elevation correction in garmin connect.

Inaccurate heart rate reading from the optical sensor can be caused by lower ambient temperatures at this time of year. And as a consequence, everything else that relies on HR data, like for example calories or recorvery time, are inaccurate as well.

  • Thanks for the response! In my location it is still quite warm, so that doesn't really explain the inaccurate heart rate measure. I turned off and on my watch, cleaned the heart rate monitor (optical bit on the back side) and checked to make sure my watch has been updated. Anything else I can try?

Also: how do I set Garmin connect to correct the altitude? I'm not seeing that as an option.

It is turned on by default for devices without barometric altimeter. I don't know how to do it in the mobile app, but on the garmin connect website If you view the activity you will see on the right side "Eleveation correction: enabled" (or disabled). And you can also click it to change the setting.

  • Thank you, that was very helpful.
