Forerunner 235 back button not working

The back button on my forerunner 235 has stopped working.  All the other buttons work as normal.  I have done the hard reset / turn off & on.   It may work one or two times after that, but then it stops working again?

Is anyone able to help?

Thanks heaps

  • I am having the same issue and can't find a fix.

  • I am also having the same issue and can't locate a fix.  I hope Garmin will look at these questions and put a way to deal with it.

  • I couldn't fix this and ended up contacting Garmin directly.  I tried all sorts of fixes they recommended ... hard and soft reset, sitting it in water for a time and then letting it dry, but nothing worked.  They ended up asking me to send in my watch and they sent me a refurbed one for $150 (I think, or maybe a little less).  I love my 235 cos it does everything I need and the replacement was much cheaper than getting a new decent activity watch of any sort.  The replacement works perfectly (I figure it was refurbed by Garmin so should be spot on) and my old one had about 5 years of solid use running and ocean swimming so had a good life.
So I recommend contacting Garmin directly and following that path.  They were pretty prompt on correspondence and I was happy with the experience and outcome

  • All external button are mechanically pressing a switch located on the motherboard via a small pin. Nothing to do with the Firmware unfortunately.

To better understand if the problem is coming from the external button/pin not pressing on the motherboard switch, or the switch itself, you will need to open the watch.
I've done a VDO on the FR220, and at 11:30, I'm pressing directly on the motherboard switches to check the watch function.

You can also see the small pin the external button is pressing on (as the back button is missing) at 10sec

You could also remove teh external button and press on the pin but then, I'm not sure if/how it can be remounted firmly on the watch.

Here is the link to the VDO, I was replacing the case of a fully functional watch missing the back button with another case from a broken watch.
