Forerunner 235 broken by update

Hi there,

I'd like to voice my huge disappointment concerning Garmin Support.

My Forerunner 235 is about 3,5 years old and has last week been ruined by an update from Garmin. It updated from fw 8.20 to 8.30 during synchronizing. When switching it on again, it now freezes during boot, showing the Garmin logo. Reset to factory settings by the published keypressing not possible.

I called support and they instantly knew it has to be sent back. As it doesn't have warranty any more, I can only get a refurbished watch for 135 €. This then is only warranted for 90 days and could quite quickly suffer the same fate than the old one.

This is really crappy! You could at least offer me a discount for a new watch.

Please think about a more customer-oriented solution here. Offering old products without significant warranty, which apparrently could be repaired but were not sent back to the owner makes me doubt, if it is a good idea to buy other products from your company.

How old to you feel your 1 year warranted watch should be before Garmin stops hooking you up?  A refurbished watch at that price with an additional 90 day warranty seems quite fair to me.

Garmin didn't have to offer you anything at all, but they did.  Maybe when you realize this you'll get over your misguided feelings.

I'm having the same problem! It seems as though there are a few other people on this forum having the same problem with little response. I tried to get customer service to help with the bad update, but that was a joke. They offered me the same deal as you, a refurbished watch that will probably have the same problem they next time they create an update. It may be time to find another GPS watch company. Let me know if you have any luck fixing your watch.

You're completely missing the point, Tess.  The watch was working fine until Garmin's software update bricked it.  At a minimum they should allow ti to revert to the previous software version.

  • Or Give him another one for free.

This is what the OP said. Was the problem caused by the update?  I doubt it or this forum would be flooded with "update 8.30 bricked my watch".  We don't know.  The OP could have disconnected from their computer improperly.  I did that after an update and bricked a VA3 a couple of years ago.  So, I get it and so does Garmin.  The OP has a 1 year warranted watch that stopped working at 3 1/2 years and Garmin gave them an offer that they weren't required to do but did so anyway. What's there not to get?
