Forerunner 235 arrow keys don't work on clock face

I am using a Forerunner 235 with system version 8.20. From the watch face, I no longer have access to the step count, heart rate, or system settings using the arrow keys. Is this a known bug or a planned regression in functionality?

....solved by turning it on and off again. How embarassing.
