Step counter and treadmill

This is probably a ridiculously easy fix but I'm not seeing it. When I run "indoor" (treadmill) the mileage is always a fair amount off from reality. Ex: I ran 10mi today but my watch logged 8.4. This isn't surprising as the pedometer in your wrist cannot possibly be that accurate. Nonetheless, after I edit the distance on the Garmin app, the step counter never updates and I cannot find any option to edit it manually. So my steps will still reflect 8.4mi of running rather than 10mi.

Anyone have a quick fix?

  • Go into Garmin connect , settings , user settings , custom stride length.    It gives to the option to enter how many steps you take over a set distance.

Mine still reads slightly under what the gym treadmills say even with doing the above but that was measuring on a flat surface not a moving treadmill.

  • If you are expecting the watch to re-calculate your steps it won't do that.  Because your step count for that activity is accurate.  The reason for the distance deviation comes down to Stride Length which is estimated.  I have one gripe with Garmin in this particular area, there system is bone head stupid in regards to using actual recorded runs in the Run function as a base to estimate the Stride Length for an Indoor Run, from what I have seen is the two functions do NOT cross over.  If you want a better estimate of your stride length for Indoor Run then turn the GPS ON for that activity and spend about 4 weeks running outdoors using the GPS enabled Indoor Run Function.  BTW, you will NOT get any VO2 Max estimates but it will help get a more dialed in Stride Length for a treadmill.
