unreasonably low calorie counts

What can I do to improve this?  I hiked 9.5 miles for 3 hours and 45 minutes and my calorie burned is 197???  Should be about 1297!

Ran/walked 17 miles and it records 303 calories burned??

This is especially perplexing since I do have a hr monitor.

  • Not sure how it is calculated but there are a few things I would imagine could effect it.  These settings will need to be set correctly to ensure at least some sort of hope of a good calorie burn.   Also I would do a hard reboot of watch (hold upper left button for 35sec until screen goes black), as this seems to help weird issues.  Do any of the numbers/settings below seem far from reality?

1.)  Make sure profile is setup properly (Gender, Age, Weight, Activity Class)

2.)   Set resting and maximum heart rate manually to a known value that is good.  Maximum HR should be from a max HR test (hard hill intervals) or end of a 5k where you sprinted the last minute or so.  Can always add 5bpm if you don't think it was for sure MAX.   Had you ever set this?  Did you use age calc?  Look at past activities that you know you worked VERY hard (intervals... or a hard finish run... what was the peak?)  you can use that in cross checking your maximum as well.

3.)  What does it say your vo2max is?  there is a slight chance it could effect the calculation... if it has your vo2max super low (<38?) , might want to update it in profile to something in the 40-55 range depending on hypothetical fitness, see if that effects anything.  Your next outdoor run it will adjust it/redo it anyhow...
