Time measurement, while doing an interval training, not accurate (Forerunner 235)

I do a lot of interval training. For example 6 times 1000m in D1 or D2 with a 800m rest. Or 10 times 400m fast with 400m of rest. I run quit flat. Ever time my new lab begins the time measurement isn’t accurate. This is only in the beginning, let's say the first minute. My watch is telling me I’m going way to slow or way to fast. Most of the time it’s telling me I’m going way to slow. It's annoying that my watch gives me warnings all the time while I know that I’m running in the right tempo. So I think there is something wrong in the calculation of the
average speed. Especially in the beginning of a new lap. Is somebody else facing the same issues? What can I do about it?

  • 'Pace' is what you mean, yes that is a VERY common issue with any type of GPS.  Any time there are large swings in speed, the sensor/calculations takes time to catchup with location, trying to filter out bad data, averaging, etc.  Especially for walking/standing recoveries.

Often on intervals like that I just make sure to speed up just a touch in the last 5-10seconds of my recovery jog.  This allows the GPS to pickup my increasing speed while in recovery lap, then it is much closer to real pace in the first 5-10sec of my workout lap.  You can download a 'Configurable Pace' data field from the Garmin App Store which allows you to change from just INSTANT or LAP Pace... to a adjustable sliding window of time, so maybe the last 10seconds...or 30seconds...etc.  Helps zone in on pace more than Lap Pace... but more accurate than the Instant pace.   Although this will not help with your Pace displayed on the workout screen or the beeping... LOL.   Making the pace range in the workout a bit wider helps with the beeps.

Thank you so much NickMN! A great tip to speed up earlier. Your answer makes sense. It's quite logic as you think about it.
