Use of Forerunner 235 with BaseCamp

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum as this is also about BaseCamp and Garmin Training Center.

I've just bought two Forerunner 235 to replace the two Forerunner 305s used by my wife and I. We stopped using them a few years ago and Garmin Training Center was on my wife's old computer. She managed both 305s and we were able to compare the tracks, heart rates etc. for both of us. Also comparing older data with new data to see our improved fitness.

I expected to be able to use BaseCamp, as I do with my other Garmin GPSrs. However about 24 hours of data was somehow deleted while I was registering the new 235s. The previous four hours of hours screen of heart rate went blank.

I then connected to BaseCamp and downloaded all data. I got three waypoints - Garmin US, EU and Taiwan; plus one track. But the expected track of about 150 miles, was only four points at home.

I looked on Garmin's website and found that GTC has been replaced by Garmin Connect. So I installed Garmin Connect on my iPhone. No track data can be displayed. Also there is a gap where the lost data should be. Also no ability to compare old and new data. Can GC be used with both 235s

I would guess that the 235s wont work with GTC and as there is no equivalent replacement and BC can't be used, have I wasted a lot of money on buying the 235s. I suppose I could go back to the 305s and sell the 235s!!!

Or am I missing something.
  • You and your wife will each need to install Garmin Connect Mobile on your phones as you will want to sync your device to your respective accounts. Garmin Connect will allow you to view all of the data from your activity, including GPS tracks (if it's an outdoor activity) as well as compare multiple activities with one another.

I'm not sure exactly what is occurring in regards to not being able to view "tracks" based on your post but would encourage you to visit support.garmin.com for FAQS and videos.

Lastly, this FAQ may be of some help if you are trying to upload older Training Center data to Garmin Connect.
  • Many thanks for a most informative reply. I've followed your suggestions in the FAQ and found the Windows version of Garmin Connect. I've clicked on 'Sync' in GE, but today's heart rate does not appear. Does one have to use the 'Safely Remove Hardware....' after doing a sync?

I'm typing as I do things and have just disconnected the 235 and the heart rate display has gone blank with the high and low values reset. I guess this is what happened when I had a loss of data.

My wife does not have an iPhone, so I guess that she will have to install GE on her laptop.

Tracks: I had expected BaseCamp to import my 235's tracks, like my other GPSrs. As Garmin has pre-set waypoints for it's own locations, can I add my locations with the 235?

I've looked at the training videos, but they are not very comprehensive.

I've just turned on my iPhone and done a sync, but today's heart rate chart is blank, just like GC on this laptop. What am I doing that is wrong? Yesterday's and earlier is available but there are gaps. I've been wearing the 235 continuously except while showering each morning. I know that the wrist strap is adjusted correctly as I keep checking the heart rate by pressing the down chevron and the chart displays without gaps apart from while showering.

OK, what do we want to do with our 235's? The same as our old 305s. I'm now 75, so wont be training for next years marathon! We walked the local countryside footpaths wearing our 305s only while walking. With GTC could see where we were when the heart rates increased, like a steep hill, and compare today's with previous walks on the same footpath. We could see how each of us were improving our fitness. Is this possible with the 235s?

    Thanks again for the help.
