5k training plan NEWBIE

I’ve signed up for the Cardiff Half Marathon next October and having not run for 4 years I’ve started my training early.

I’m a keen gym goer anyway (5 times a week) and I’ve downloaded the Garmin 5k training plan.

I’m asking though on the blank days where I’m not running, can I go to the gym? It doesn’t say rest in the non running days so does anyone have advice on this? Or should I just rest until the next run?

Thanks
Sarah
  • I think the best advice is simply to listen to your body. If you can handle it without wearing yourself out, I see no problem. Although I'm not training for a marathon as you are, I run 5K every weekday (5x per week), and then I go to the gym right after my run for a hour or so of weight training and I've kept this up for years without any issues. We are all different though, so try it and see how you feel.

  • On the Connect app on my phone it does say rest on the non running days and I usually swim on those days. Like Max556 says just listen to your body.

Hi Sarah! Great question. The simple answer is YES. Incorporating routine strength training into your run program is very beneficial to improving your performance on race day. You can do both simultaneously. Just ensure your body is getting the necessary macronutrients it needs to aid in recovery.
