slow gps acquisition

Has anyone encountered noticeably slower gps acquisition recently? I pretty much start my runs at the same locations and never had to wait more than 30 seconds to get a signal but within the last couple of months I've had to wait a few minutes to connect. I make sure to sync with the mobile app prior to running which should update the satellite locations...

If you do not include gps for several days, then it searches for satellites for a very long time
  • Did you at some point connect your watch to Garmin Express version 6.7.2.0 on your PC?

If so, update your Garmin Express to the newest version and connect the watch again.

Version 6.7.2.0 installed a non-functional epo.bin (the file used to speed up GPS acquisition) on the watch, and it would stay there and block for the "good" epo.bin. A newer version of Garmin Express will fix this.

(At least the above happened to me on the Fenix 5X+, and to several others on the Forerunner 935. I assume that the 235 was hit by the same problem, but I don't know for sure.)

I wonder if that's the issue! I currently have 6.8.1.0 installed but for some reason I have not been able to sync with my computer. My computer does not seem to recognize my device. I have reinstalled Express to no avail. Still need to test this on a different computer to see if it's a computer issue or a Forerunner issue.

So I was able to get it to sync from a different PC with the latest version of Express and I still had to wait a few minutes to acquire a signal. I may reach out to support so they can tell me that my watch is 2 years old and probably needs replaced.
  • I suppose your watch has an About screen (or screens) showing firmware version, etc. Does it also show the state of your EPO? On my watch it showed "EPO: Expired" when I had the problem.

    GPS version is 3.30

    EPO.bin date modified is 9/6/2018.

I went in and blew away the old EPO.bin file, synced with Express and confirmed that there is a new file in its place. Hopefully I can get out today to test. Fingers crossed.

Walked outside, fired up my watch, and had a GPS connection in about 15 seconds. Thank you AllanOlesen67 for pointing me in the right direction!

these days I have the same problem! It’s been now 15 minutes I’m waiting and during the time I write this post I still had no connection to the gps! This is really a pain. I Have a new Fenix 5 Plus. What can I do?
I also noted many other problems such as difficulties to connect my watch to my computer or do updates. I really start to be angry at Garmin, this is a damn hassle to make it work

  • yeah garmin should do something!!

got the 245 and now the 945 and it takes so long sometimes, got all the updates..

i remember when i first got the 245, it was so quick - i never had to deal with garmin, but since i also got problems with garmin connect/musicimport/macbook  it seems with every update it all gets more buggy..... cant understand that garmin..
