GPS delay when using workout

I just ran using a workout for the first time. I activated my workout in the menu and then ran it using "run" in the watch as suggested. Halfway through the run, I got the message "GPS ready". When I looked at the data, my watch had only registered half the run...
Is it possible to start a workout in this way but then wait until the GPS is online before actually starting the run?
Thanks!
Nick
  • Yep, just don't hit the start/run button when it says "Using Run"...wait....then it will go to the first step of workout (warmup maybe..) and will tell you "'RunIcon' to Begin".... wait on that screen until you see GPS ready alert.

Recently I have seen GPS ready, is taking much much longer then the past year or two. Something has gone wrong with firmware or GPS updates.... hoping its resolved soon.
  • To echo NickNM, I set up my run on my watch BEFORE I change into my running gear, put shoes on ... etc, but I do not hit the "Start" button yet. By the time I'm ready to go (2-3 minutes later), the "GPS Ready" usually appears by then, although there is the odd time it takes longer (5-7 minutes). Once GPS is confirmed, I hit the "Start" button and run. Another good reason to set up the run a few minutes prior to running is it seems to allow the HR get a better lock, in my experience anyway.

    Thanks for the answers!
In general GPS confirmation takes just a few seconds.

  • A GPS-device keeps a table where the satellites are. If you haven't used it for some time, or synched it with Garmin Express, the table get's too old, and then it takes longer to find the satellites.

And if you have used a certain version of Garmin Express, the table may have been overwritten with an old one from Garmin Express. This was a problem recently on the 5+ watches, and I suppose it affected all Garmin watches. The very latest version of Garmin Express (I don't remember the version number, perhaps a beta?) doesn't have this problem.
  • Yeah my GPS lock issue was fairly short lived maybe a week or two - it's back being locked before I leave my garage or even house. Glad they got things figured out :)
