Switching between heart rate methods

I am not happy with the wrist monitor results when I run (way too high HRs). So what is the proper way to switch from wrist to chest strap and back again. I recently used the strap and was unable to get the wrist readings *sensor seemed to be running - green lights were active) to show (down arrow) when removing strap and turning off heart monitor broadcast. I had to power off the watch and when I powered it on, the display worked. Is there a documented way to make the switch back and forth?
  • Are you talking about switching HR data sources in the middle of recording a (particular) timed activity, or just using an external HRM for some timed activities (in their entirety) and the Wrist HR feature for other activities, through manual intervention by the user?
  • Put the heart strap on, select an activity - device automatically switches to the HR strap once it's detected, wrist HR should be deactivated.
Stop the activity, revert back to watch face, wrist HR should turn on and HR strap should be 'disconnected'

There should be no need for a manual intervention.
  • Oh, Philip, I didn't realise cap3344 was talking about all-day heart rate tracking or the Heart Rate widget; “down arrow” means SFA to me, if the starting point/state of the watch was not explicitly established, and the user's individual arrangement of the widget loop isn't disclosed. You win. :-)

OK, normally I am on wrist HRM - but when I run sometimes I want to use my strap (its not a Garmin strap, but does connect).; if this should happen automatically when I put the strap on, that's great (but I don't see any visual indication that this happened). the first time I did it, I did have a problem after removing the strap, the down arrow pressed when TIME is on face did NOT display the wrist heart rate, in fact, it didn't do anything. No matter how I tweaked the HRM settings, I saw no change in this behavior until I powered the watch off and on.
  • What specific chest monitor are you using. Garmins watches will ONLY connect to a monitor broadcasting with the ANT+ system, they will NOT work with Bluetooth monitors. To put it simply get a Garmin monitor, the low cost basic monitor only costs about 45 dollars.
