Many software 'updates' lately

In the last few weeks, I think I had at least 4 software updates on the watch. It then asks whether I want to install now, or later. Every time I install the updates, but each time I check the versions in the Menu > System > About, the version numbers have not changed at all.

Does someone know what kind of software updates these are? Or are these fake updates? Nothing seems to be updated.
  • Same here. I don't know what has been updated.
  • I've been wondering the same thing, even wrote down the current versions of the software numbers to check if they were increasing or not.
  • There seemed to be a couple updates regarding the Android pairing issue lately. I dismissed them because I do not have a pairing problem, and from experience, I have noticed updates seem to have a tendency of breaking other things. However, I have not gotten any updates without a version number attached recently. Perhaps I have not gotten the mysterious updates because I never applied the last 2 version updates ... ??

For anyone who is keen to know which updates are being pushed, the obvious thing to do is to hold off installing updates when notified on the wearable device, and fire up Garmin Express on the computer to take a look at what's in the queue. It doesn't matter whether the update files were uploaded to the device wirelessly (but not automatically installed yet), and the user doesn't even have to dig up the USB docking cable if he/she is pathologically allergic to using wires to sync data.

Don't just proceed with installing stuff just because they're available now, and then ask questions later!

Have you been keeping an eye on (or a record of) every module: GPS, Display, Bluetooth/ANT, WHR and Connect IQ (and for FR630 users, Touchscreen and Wi-Fi but not WHR), in addition to the device firmware version?

Does someone know what kind of software updates these are?

One obvious update (or maybe even multiple updates) around this time of the year is of course the Time Zone Map, which would not show up as a separate module in the device's System/About pages, to deal with late changes to daylight saving policies around the world.
  • Thanks ASmugDill. As mentioned in the first post, I indeed checked all the version numbers, but they didn't change after all the updates. Next time I'll check Garmin Express, that's a good idea!
  • Today I again got an update on the watch. I checked GE before installing, but no update was mentioned there. So no clue what the update is that my watch is showing.
  • I was alerted to one on my FR630 (which shares the same firmware/update files as the FR235) the other day. In Garmin Express, the only item in the pending list was “User settings”. Once I allowed the watch to install the “update”, and checked again in Garmin Express, the pending list was cleared.

I have a FR230 with the same issue, a lot of firmware update notification. I don't think it's a real update but something wrong with sync between garmin connect and the watch. I have the last FW 7.70
  • Yes, many 1 min updates in the last month, like 5 or so. With no change in the software version
  • Since I now only wear my 235 in the office (since personal wifi devices such as my new 645 are not allowed), I haven't turned mine on or updated it yet. I opened up Garmin Express to see if it had any updates waiting for the 235. Besides a few app updates, it says under Other items: "User Settings". So maybe there is a change in general to the user settings, perhaps related to the shift to Garmin Connect 4.5.
