Maximum heart rate

I've been using a Forerunner 230 for a year now and have just bought a premium heart rate monitor. The HRM seems to be accurately measuring my HR and I've just done my first run and everything seems OK except I think my maximum heart rate must be higher that the usual 220 - age formula predicts (175bpm). I've been running about 30km per week for coming up to 2 years now and am 46 and I guess the 'standard' formula won't be accurate for everyone. So the Garmin thinks the 7km run I did was run at 89% or max HR on average but I was actually taking it pretty easy and talking all the way along so I don't think I was anywhere near 89% of max HR.

I realise it's only my first run with the HRM but I'm wondering will the watch/connect learn from my runs and automatically adjust my maximum heart rate over time or should I manually input a higher max HR in my profile settings?

Thanks.
  • Max HR is individual to you and the formulas are not great. The only way to know if do some maximal Test, like Hill repeats, or intervals or a sprint at the end of a max effort 5K. I’m 47 and my max is 174 but everyone is different.

Thanks, I'll do some trials then. I suspect my max is nearer to 195 judging by my initial easy run.
