Continued difficulty acquiring GPS signal

Had my 230 now for about 9 months, and for first 6 or 7 months had no problems with it, always seemed to acquire a GPS signal pretty much instantaneously.

In May I injured my knee, and therefore been running a lot less over the last couple of months, though been getting back in more regularly over the last month and a half or so. During that period, I've started to have a lot of issues with the watch that I didn't have previously. On many of my runs, I'm unable to acquire a signal at all, with the indicator never getting past the flashing first bar, no matter how long I give it to acquire signal, holding it as you should (away from tall buildings/structures trees etc. and face up), and it won't acquire at all during the run. On others, I acquire signal partway through the run (this morning managing to finally lock on on both my runs in pretty much the same position, once as I finished my jog down to my local parkrun, the other as I entered the finish straight, so not massively helpful in either case - oddly enough, the park is the one place it seems best at locking on).

I've tried a hard reset and then resyncing with Garmin Express, and as yet it doesn't seem to have helped much, as it's currently sat in my back garden, still only on a flashing second bar after over 5 minutes of trying, and hasn't even managed to sync time yet. Software is up to date with current 7.5 version.

It does occasionally acquire a full signal, so it's obviously not that the GPS receiver itself is physically completely fragged. Is there anything else I can try?
  • I eventually sent mine off for a replacement from Garmin, which has been fine.

  • I am having the same issues.  Had my Vivoactive 3 for 2 years now and pretty much no issues getting the gps connected for my runs until a week and a half ago - finished a a 10k and was walking it out on the cool down then felt the buzz saying it finally connected.....

  • I"m having same issue with my Forerunner 225. No GPS at all. Injured knee and had 1 yr period no running. Haven't been able to get signal. It just searches forever. Software version is 2.90 but GPS Version is 0.00. GPS will not update on software update.

  • I have been using my FR45 for 9months. No issues till recently. All of a sudden since yesterday ...the GPS unit seems to be dead! Come on Garmin you can't be so bad.

  • This has been exactly my experience! It started last week. Not connecting to GPS after 10 to 15 minutes. Honestly I didn't even wait around longer to see if it would ever connect. I got my FR45 beginning of May 2020. I've spoken with support about this twice. The first time they suggested I delete the CPE file in the remoteSW folder. That almost always fixes the problem. But every time I sync it comes back. Today support had me do a hard reset, I said everything back up and synced, and it worked. I thought I would test it out this afternoon before I go on my run tomorrow morning and lo and behold, won't connect to GPS. I'm going bonkers.

  • So many people with the same problem, I had the same issue with my 230 and checked the about section in system and found GPS to be 0.0. I opened a dialogue with garmin uk and tried all options they gave me when I questioned the possibility of a rogue update somewhere down the line I was offered a refurbished one at no cost As mine was still under warranty albeit not used for a while mine has now been replaced and working fine, I just need to Personally get running again

you can enter the serial number on the garmin website to check its warranty status if you are unsure

  • I had same trouble with FR225. Boudght it in 2016 and it worked great til I had an injury and stopped running 2 years. When I started back, couldn't get signal. GPS 0.00 version. Garmin said that meant the GPS was not working correctly and I needed a new watch. I asked if I could get the latest GPS update version 3.5 in a file form and I could attempt to upload myself. They said they would look into it. No updates on that question.
