Gear Tracker

I'm new to Garmin and have set up my two pairs of running shoes on my Forerunner 235 but can't figure out how to track each pair before a run. I alternate wearing them and am assuming I would select the appropriate pair from the Garmin watch just prior to the run? I would I go to Garmin Connect to select the pair? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  • You can only assign one default pair of shoes to the Running activity.

Set the pair that you use most as the default and then manually update Gear in the activity in GC when you use the other pair.

It would be nice if it were possible to automatically do as you suggest. If you want this functionality you can submit a request here.

It would also be nice to be able to have sets of Gear that were assigned to an activity automatically depending on the bike for example.

Gear is relatively new in GC but it is time the functionality was upgraded.
  • Gear tracking is done via the app (or website), not the watch. Gear information is added after the activity is completed. You can set a default shoe that will automatically be added to each new run when it is completed. If it happens that you wore a different shoe for the run, just go to the activity in the app and change it to the correct shoe. Mileage stats for each shoe are updated instantly in my experience. Overall the gear tracking has worked well for me.
  • Just to expand on what jlgranth wrote above, only Garmin Connect knows anything about your gear, and it's Garmin Connect (and not the wearable device or cycling computer) that creates records of logical associations between one or more gear items with an activity record, after it has been uploaded. If you completed and saved three timed runs with your watch but didn't sync the watch with Garmin Connect for 48 hours, those activity records would not be associated with any gear items in the meantime.

For the user's convenience, Garmin Connect allows the automatic assignment of gear items to newly uploaded activities by some limited rules specified by the user, along the lines of all records of a particular activity type (e.g. Running, regardless of whether it's road running, trail running, treadmill running, or just running in an unspecified context) will get assigned a particular pair of shoes by default upon upload into Garmin Connect – with no exceptions and no consideration given to time-of-day, geographical locality, name of the activity profile on the device (which isn't visible to Garmin Connect anyway) or any other parameter.

Gear assignments can be added, altered or removed manually by the user in Garmin Connect (throught the web front-end or using one of the Garmin Connect Mobile apps).
