Manual activities and HR data - calories question

I have a FR235 that I have been using for a few months. If I log an activity manually via the app it website I get an estimated calorie estimate based on the type of activity and duration (i.e. if I log a generic cardio activity I get about 220/hour).

One activity I do often is a cardio boot camp at the gym. I don't record anything on the watch but log the activity in Garmin connect. The FR235 does record my HR as it is always recording. When I sync in the evening are my calories being double counted? In other words, is it counting the manual activity and then also adding additional calories based on the HR data for that same time period?

Hope that makes sense. Appreciate any thoughts.
  • Wouldn't that be easy enough for you to test, simply by observing what your total calories on a particular date in the past is (as reported), then logging a manual activity to overlap with a short period in which you were most active (indicated by sustained elevated HR) on that day, and checking whether the manual activity's calories are added wholesale to the revised total?

Good point. So in doing some experimenting, it seems that it does have added calorie burn for the HR and the manual activity.
