Daily Goal not based on steps: possible?

Former Member

hey all

just got a 235 and I'm wondering if the daily activity goal could be based on something else other than steps

reason is I don't walk much during the day as I cycle a lot (both with my brompton where I go anywhere and with the mtb)
I had the same "issue" say with my old Polar m400 where it wouldn't detect my 30kms daily ride to town cos my wrist wasn't moving but I push quite a bit (avg speed is around 20km/h) and at the same time I wouldn't want to set these daily rides as training sessions cos not engaging the GPS would provide a better battery life (I'll use the 235 as my regular watch)
I was hoping that the 235 would detect the increase in heart beat or something like that

did some google searches but no luck so far

thaaaanks!
  • Across Garmin watches that do 24/7 activity tracking there are three goals
    • Steps - available on all
    • Floors - available on some with a baro altimeter
    • Intense/Active minutes - available on some with wrist based HR

IIRC, the only one on a 235 is steps (intense/active is on the 735, f5's, 935, vahr, and the 23x/630/735 doesn't have a baro)

It sounds like the one you want is intense/active though.

    Thanks for you insights Jim

after some more searches, what I'm looking for is exactly this .. Move IQ feature that's on the vivoactive HR apparently

especially the fact that will NOT appear on the activities done in order not to clutter my diary but rather just fill my daily goal

    Really?

As I understand it, events detected by Move‑IQ will appear in your calendar (irrespective of whether you have also recorded a timed activity for it), but will not have track any distance information. (How could it, if GPS is not activated?)

I've had a va-hr since it came out, and to be honest, I've turned off Move IQ. It's not that great IMHO. It doesn't really record anything, and guesses at what you're doing and just saves it in your calendar. People have posted about digging holes and putting in plants being called "swimming" by MoveIq, and that's one that's fit for all audiences :) BUT the va-hr does intense/active minutes!

And for things like HR, MoveIQ stays in 24/7 mode, and not real time.
