Indoor running accuracy

Hey guys, I am new to the forums. I have had the FR 235 since the summer but I have used them mostly for outdoors so far.

I just bought a treadmill for indoor running so I plan to use my FR 235 while running indoors. I have the proform 1295i:

Is the built in Indoor running mode on the FR235 accurate for tracking distance / speed / pace? Or should I get the Garmin foot pod?

If you have done a number of runs outdoors, it should be reasonably accurate.

A foot pod will give better accuracy indoors, but it needs to be calibrated outdoors first.

You might find though that the treadmill is not totally accurate. Just because it says 10 km/h, you might not be running at 10 km/h. The 235 will also not take any account of the incline you use on the treadmill.
  • My experience has been that after a few runs outside the pace and distance are pretty close to the TM's at my gym. However, after awhile it gets further and further off to where it will see 10:00/mile pace on the TM as 8:45/mile. This has been true with every Garmin model I've had from the 220 to the F3.

Because of that I use a footpod that I let self calibrate with 2-3 easy pace runs outside and then only use it indoors otherwise it gets the same pace creep that the watch does.
  • Agree with mostly everything said. For me, the FR235 is fairly accurate as long as I stay in the sweet spot, which is around 8:15 min/mile for me. If I deviate from that pace at all, it starts to become inaccurate. A footpod is a much better bet for accuracy.
  • ^ Same as Scott ... if I run my average "outside pace" on the TM it is quite accurate. If I have a slower or faster TM run, I start to see a bit of deviation, but never very much ... usually within +/- 5-7%.
