Cadence at 1 SPM for a few runs

I have seen my cadence at 1 SPM a few times (3 runs) now in the last couple weeks ... sure hope this isn't cadence lock! lol

It seems that the data is there on the graph in Connect (when I move my cursor along the graph), but the graph looks strange compared to normal when my cadence has recorded properly ... just a straight line instead of the dots. I tried to upload a pic but for some reason it rejects the image when I try upload it from my pc??

Anyone else seen this? So far on treadmill only.

  • Do you hold on to the treadmill? This might cause what you see.

The way around it is to buy a foot pod.
  • Nope, don't touch the handles. Happened again tonight! Most days it's good, but that's the 4th time in about 10 days now. I noticed the app was updated recently, kinda about the same time maybe ... ? Bugger! The cadence shows on the watch while I'm running, and the graph still displays it, well sorta ... the scale of the graph is so huge (from 0 to 500) so it looks like a straight line. Normally the scale is between 150-200 which shows much more detail.

  • Maybe try soft resetting both watch and phone (turn off and then back on again).

    @Max556,

We are seeing a couple of reports of cadence values displaying incorrectly in the Garmin Connect forums, coming from some cycling users. It is possible that what you are seeing may be related. Can you post a link to some activities so that we can take a closer look?

In the activities affected, did you edit any of the activity data after uploading the information?

I did a soft reset of the watch yesterday before my run, but I don't think I have rebooted my phone since the app had a noticeable update recently ... will try that today.

I did edit one thing ... I entered my Recovery HR in the notes, that's all.

Here is are a couple examples (2 days in a row)

  • You could try deleting an activity and re-uploading manually through the website and see if it comes up correct. Then edit like you have done and see what it does.
  • Hmmm ... forgive my ignorance ... "Dumb question alert" ... I normally don't tinker with the data, but if I understand correct: if I delete an activity on the app or website, then re-sync, it will reappear on the website/app? I know the watch stores up to 200 hours of data, but I've never deleted an activity before to see what happens.

  • A deleted activity doesn't automatically get synced back to the website from the watch using Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile. If you delete an activity the only way to transfer it back to the website is by connecting the watch to a computer with the USB cable, clicking on the white + in the blue circle on Garmin Connect and uploading your data by navigating to the Garmin\Activity folder on your 235.

Garmin Express and Garmin Connect Mobile won't sync an activity twice even though it has been deleted and is not present on Garmin Connect. The file must get flagged as having been uploaded already.

At least it's not like one site I used to use where with their current products if you deleted it from the website it also got deleted from the device and there was no way to recover it.
  • Thanks Michael. That seems to be a pretty simple process.

I have, however, figured out why the SPM shows as 1 ... it is indeed the editing of the run as Joseph eluded to earlier. I did my normal 5K today, checked the app before I edited and it had the proper SPM listed. I then edited it by adding my RHR to the notes, checked it again, and the SPM had changed to 1. So there you go. This is just like editing a "Record" run resets your personal records ...?

  • Looks like a Garmin Connect bug to me. Do you edit the run via a mobile app, or Garmin Connect website?

Your device is fine by the looks of things.
