FR 230 GPS gone haywire poor accuracy

Hi all, just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this before I stop using the forerunner 230.
Last 3 weeks every run I do starts fine, then randomly I will run a world record mile which then ruins all my data.
Example - I will run a usual 5 mile route. At the end of the run the garmin will say I ran 5.8 hence in there somewhere will be a 3 minute mile. This happens every run, I have hard reset, messed around with normal GPS / glonass, smart / every second etc. Running version 7.10. Happens regardless of what terrain I'm on or weather I'm in tree cover or on an open route.

Any help would be great, thanks!
  • Can you send a link to your activity from Garmin Connect? That way someone can look at the data.

Hi there, thanks for reply apologies but could you tell me how to send a link to my garmin connect?
    Thankyou

I'm quite happy with my 230. I use Normal GPS and 1 second recording with good results. Enabling GLONASS didn't produce as good results as Normal GPS for me, so I leave it off.
  • Glonass accuracy

I read forum about Glonass Accuracy on 920Xt and it made reception even worse. Glonass should be more helpuful in higher latitude, where more russian satelitas are positioned. The most helpful should be 1-sec recording. I had a few problems with GPS accuracy, when watches tracked some point a few hundred metres away from my track and ruined my runing statistic, but after reading forum about but poor glonass accuracy, I did not find courage to try it yet.
  • And yet, enabling GLONASS on my Edge 520 gives good results. Thought the same would apply to my 230, but it wasn't the case.
  • so perhaps something wrong with glonass chip in 230, 920xt ... and GPS doesnt work as good as in Edge 520 either. I have setting - 1 sec recording, only GPS on my Edge 520 and never had any problem with accuracy. I live in central Europe, its counted for higher latitude, so I could give a try to Glonass setting, its part of Globe, where more russian sat. are located.
  • From a quick search I did, the 230 and the 920xt use the same GPS chipset - the Mediatek MT3333.

This probably explains the similarly bad GPS performance with GLONASS enabled.
  • I can just confirm that my 230 performs considerably better with GPS only than with Glonass enabled. It still struggles a little bit in narrow streets with tall buildings, but this is to be expected. By the way - do you know if Garmin still work on firmware updates for 230 or is 7.1 the final release?
