What's the best way to record Gym workouts?

Hello,

I've just received my new 235 and I'm wondering what the best way of recording gym workouts that aren't Running or Cycling (i.e. Insanity sessions). I've used the "Other" option for the first time, but I wondered what other people do.

Cheers.

There are a few good apps you can download from Connect IQ. One of the best I found for HIIT training is Work It Out Fitness Interval. As far as doing an Insanity workout, I still use the "Other" activity. FYI, you'll want to use a chest strap instead of the oHRM if you want fairly accurate readings. There's too much movement and too rapid HR changes for the oHRM to track properly.
  • I would recommend you use the Indoor Bicycle App, NOT Other. The reason for this is because Other triggers the GPS and because of this you'll end up with a high activity session that records near zero mileage. The result of that is your VO2 max will really get tanked, you may even see a VO2 max of something around 10 or even lower. As a result the Recovery Advisor will be WAY OFF as well as your calorie estimate and estimated heart rate. BTW, IMO Other is more suited to riding a bicycle on the road with the GPS recording your route and speed. Not sure what that will do for the VO2 Max but suspect the impact on the actual value will be much lower than working at high intensity with no miles recorded.

Indoor Bicycle does NOT trigger the GPS circuit and because of this it's excluded from any VO2 Max calculations. As for the Recovery Advisor calculations, that will be done purely on your heart rate and total time based on your VO2 Max as determined by Running or Walking using the Outdoor Run App.
  • You can turn GPS "OFF" on OTHER mode ...

GPS can be "turned off" for OTHER, and I'm pretty sure (someone please correct me) that OTHER does not affect either RUN or CYCLING V02 Max.

Why wouldn't you use CYCLING mode which is for ... wait for it ... cycling outdoors (with or without GPS ... you can turn this on or off too)!

I don't INDOOR CYCLE, but isn't there a way to measure distance (foot-pod?). I thought CYCLING and RUNNING had separate V02 Max ... I might be wrong, but if I'm not, using INDOOR CYCLING would definitely affect your "Cycling" V02 Max

To the OP, I think using OTHER (with GPS "off") or an app from CIQ is your best bet.

Because Max, wait for it, this idiot forgot he had set the Bike Outdoor profile to Hide way back when, so he didn't think the 235 had a Bike Outdoor app. BTW, just took it off Hide so if I ever get around to purchasing a bicycle I may actually use this feature.
  • Cheers guys, I'll use the indoor cycling option. :)

I know this is primarily a running and cycling device, but it's a bit disappointing there's a limited number of profiles to choose from. :(
