Indoor running accuracy

I have had my 235 for almost a year and the vast majority of my runs have been outside where my watch has performed well and I have been happy with it. I have been doing more treadmill running this month after being forced inside by crappy Minnesota winter weather and Im finding that the indoor running mileage isn't very accurate. Its typically off by .1 or .2 miles to start and by the end of a 6 or 7 mile run it can be up to 3/4 of a mile.

Is there a way to calibrate the indoor running option to be more accurate? I know it goes by arm swing and Im not a big arm swinger, but Im consistent with it whether Im inside out out.
  • How do you know the treadmill distance is accurate? ;-)

The only way to get more accuracy is use a foot pod.

Its a new treadmill so I hope that its accurate. I have used other treadmills sporadically at the gym and gotten similar results.
  • In that case you need a foot pod

  • I have also been forced inside due to very rare cold and snow in my area. My running usually consists of outside year round, and the few runs I had done on the treadmill were very close ... until now ... I've noticed a trend after 3 weeks on a treadmill (15-5K runs ... 3.1 miles).

I've found that if I run at or near my outside average speed, the distance is basically correct ... not worth worrying about. However, on a couple low energy days, I dropped the treadmill speed by .5 mph my watch said 3.1 and the treadmill said around 2.9. Conversely, on runs at .5 mph faster (or more) than my average outside speed and the treadmill reached 3.1 about .2-3 before my watch.

My conclusion is that although the accelerometer learns from your outside running, the accuracy of the treadmill will depend on how close you emulate your outside runs ... ?

    Anyone else notice this?

  • You could try setting a custom stride length for running on treadmill and turn it off for outdoor running.

For setting stride length there are two different options in Connect. Go to bottom right of screen select 'More...'and select user settings and get option to set stride for walk and run. If you go to Watch symbol (top of screen) you only get option to set stride length to set walk not run.

I've had issues with accelerometer not calculating distance correctly outdoors so you may be having similar issue. Mine is missing about 1900 metres from 8000 metres (distance of 8000 is reasonably accurate because I tested on street runs with known block sizes).

I haven't tried a foot pod but probably more accurate than some treadmills. I assume that you are doing this for self improvement and you could simply note the actual distance and amend distance in Connect.

I came onto the forums to see if anyone else was having this issue. Just got my new FR235 and using it inside on a track: after 2 miles it was ~0.5 miles out - and no, there is no possibility the track distance was wrong based on my lap count plus known approx. pace matching.

I haven't tested it outside yet due to my location but based on the answers here I'll wait until I can do that before contacting Garmin. But assuming that proves Ok there's no way it's acceptable for the accelerometer to be this inaccurate. I never had this problem with my FR220 :(
  • The 235 learns you to make the accelerometer more accurate. To do this you need to run outside! Do some GPS running and it will get more accurate
