Forerunner 235 keeps crashing after firmware update 7.1

My watch keeps crashing and can only be reset by forcing power off with a long press of the on/off button. Upon restarting the watch it reverts back to a much earlier state sometimes 3 or 4 days previous.

It's so frustrating. Is anybody else having the same problems.
  • Not sure what you mean by crashing, but when you perform a 'Hard Reset' as you have done, the time/date will also be reset upon restart. Going outside and acquiring a GPS signal will set the correct time/date.

    Mine has also started doing this. I plugged it into the computer to upload a run, and it became stuck in an infinite loop of crash and reboot this morning until I did the long press. It wiped out all of my step data for the day, along with wiping out my last 7 days of heart rate info. C'mon Garmin.....

    Basically it happens when I get a notification from my iPhone. The notification will stay on the screen which remains lit up and does not clear back to the clock screen. The only way to clear the notification and to get back to the watch is to do a hard reset.

    I cannot use any other feature of the watch until I reset. This has only started happening after updating to fw 7.1

    I've had the exact same problem, again only since the update. It will only happen maybe once or twice a week, but its still very annoying.
  • Try to reset using one of the following:

    Method 1. Through hardware key sequence in boot time
    1. Press and hold LAP/BACK button. Keep it pressed, and;
    2. Press for few seconds LIGHT button to turn watch on;
    3. When you see menu "Clean user data: Yes / No?" release LAP/BACK button;
    4. Now you can choose correct option (choose "No" and you will cancel reset!), choose "Yes" and clear all user data, if you wish.

    Method 2. Another hardware key sequence at boot time
    1. Press and release LIGHT (POWER) button, so watch enters boot sequence;
    2. When Garmin LOGO appears, press and hold START + BACK both (those two, on right side);
    3. On first beep release START;
    4. On second beep release BACK.

    Method 3. Garmin WebUpdater

    Hope that helps.
  • I've also experienced a few crashes and automatic hard resets a few times.
    What is the most annoying in it, is that the 235 doesn't keep time and I have to acquire a GPS signal for it. And I have not found a way to manually input a date, which is kind of... unusual for a watch.
    This has now caused a few times that my indoor activity goes to wrong date and time because I'm not able to go outside for GPS.

    IMO for a watch which is supposed to work 24/7, this is a very bad bug/feature.

    same

    Just chiming in to say I've had the same issue. Multiple lock-ups. Multiple hard resets. Garmin support actually replaced the device for me since they couldn't resolve it. Happened on the new watch also so it's clearly software related.

    I got so frustrated I went and got a new vivoactive HR. I guess they got me :D
  • Do you guys have any Connect IQ apps installed? Watch faces, data fields, etc?

    Exactly. Especially the watch faces... I don't use any because it seems like my watch misbehaves every time I Have one installed.

    Garmin really needs to do a better job building a "walled garden" in between the Connect IQ stuff and the core functionality of the watch. When my 235 is vanilla (no apps, watch faces, etc.) installed, I never have problems on 7.1. I installed a watch face just to try it out, and it turns into an unreliable POS. It's just not worth it.
  • Yeah, some of the Connect IQ watch faces and apps can be nasty. Took me a while to find a watch face that is stable and doesn't cause issues.
  • It's actually next to impossible for a CIQ watchface to crash the device (at least in the last 18 months). CIQ apps are VERY sandboxed in what they can do.

    When a CIQ app crashes, you'll either see "IQ!", or in the case of a watchface, revert to the default one.
