Forerunner 235 not connecting to PC

Hi all,

so, I got my new Forerunner 235, which, contrary to my old FR 610, doesn't connect to the PC by ANT+ but instead by an USB cable. The first connection worked fine, I believe I could even see it as a device in the windows explorer. But ever since, I cannot properly connect it - it will charge, but neither show up as a device on the PC, nor in Garmin Express, so I can't push anything from the PC onto the FR 235 (such as a new firmware, personal settings etc).

Luckily I still can sync my runs through the mobile app (bluetooth connection to smartphone).

Does anyone have an idea? I have removed it as a device from Garmin Express, hoping it would re-connect that way, but it didnt.
  • Have you tried cleaning the metal contacts on the watch and/or the clip on the USB docking cable?
  • The only thing I can think of is to uninstall Garmin Express and then re-install it. If you have an installation of Express that has become corrupted by an incomplete update that should get you off to a clean start.

    a) why or how would reinstalling Garmin Express help? Isn't it more like a driver issue (as I dont even see the watch as a device in windows anymore)?

    b) the contacts are not the issue as the watch is charging properly
  • Have you tried a different USB port on your PC? The ports on the front of my PC have become really 'flakey'. Sometimes they work, others they don't unless I wiggle the cord and hold it just right. I had some issues where my PC didn't recognize my watch (and other devices) but that all fixed itself when I began using the rear USB ports.

There are some good troubleshooting suggestions in this FAQ. If these suggestions don't work we would recommend reaching out to Product Support for further assistance.
  • Don't hate me for asking ... you have tried to reboot your PC right? Sometimes explorer.exe can get screwed up and needs refreshing ...

Thank you, that fixed it (for now). Except for the fact that all my stuff on the watch got wiped in the process - but the manual already warned me about that sideeffect. At least I have the newest firmware on it now.
  • Had the same issue, i removed mij forerunner simply out garmin express, and in no time my watch was found and everything worked allright
