Heart rate monitor never shuts off, killing my battery

I've had the watch about a month and it has worked great. But as of yesterday the heart rate monitor (green light) never turns off, and my battery dies after about 4 hours from a full charge. Yesterday I was perusing through the settings and turned the Heart Rate Monitor setting from Auto to Off.

I immediately turned it back on because I want it on. That's the only setting I changed, so I figure my problem has something to do with that. Also, in order to troubleshoot, if I switch it to Off, my battery is fine.

If anyone has an idea please help. Watch is useless until I get this fixed.

Forerunner 235 HR Sensor always active Solution

I had the same problem for a long time, and i have found a solution. Try to hard power off the watch ( press power button until the phone turn off ), after that turn it on again (remember to connet gps to update hours ).

Since that i never had the same problema again, HR sensor now only works for few seconds (depends of yout activity).

    Any Update On This?

My 235 randomly began experiencing the same issue. This issue of the heart rate monitor being constantly on does not seem to be the result of any software update as my 235 began experiencing the issue without any update. I don't wear the 235 when I sleep, and noticed for the first time in the middle of the night the LEDs were on and lighting up the room. I knew this was odd as it never happened before, but didn't think anything of it until the next day when I noticed the battery level dropping off much faster than usual.

    Software version: 7.10 (1bcef5c)
    WHR: 2.70 (10.02.21)

I have soft reset and hard reset multiple times and the issue continues. I can't see this being a hardware issue as nothing has changed for the physical watch - it has not been dropped, submerged, etc. I've had the watch for approximately one year and haven't experienced this previously. Previously, the battery would last for 5-7 days. Now, with the LEDs constantly on, the battery lasts approximately 1 day. The LEDs can be turned off by going through the menu and changing the "Heart Rate" from "Auto" to "Off". And, the LEDs turn off when the watch is charging. Beyond this, if the Heart Rate is set to Auto, the LEDs remain constantly on regardless of if I'm wearing the watch or any other conditions.

    Garmin, please help!

I'm fairly positive this is a software issue/bug somewhere and not a hardware issue. I've had the watch for over a year and never had this problem. Recently, the HR monitor wasn't performing correctly during a run (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?370579-OHR-not-working-7-10), so I talked to Garmin about it. They had me delete some folders in case i had corrupted data. That fixed the issue I was having with the OHRM during a run, but now the OHRM won't shut off at all, and I've never had this problem before.

    Just bought a 235

Welp, just reading this now. Just bought a 235 and it is on the way
Don't know what firmware it will be out of the box... But I guess I shouldn't update to 7.1 for now if it's on a previous version?

    A software bug would :
    a) be fixable with a factory reset
    b) affect everyone on the same software version

IMO (and I have had 2 watches go this way) something happens during the update process that bricks the OHR.It has happened at multiple software versions but I don't believe it is a bug.

Garmin had my old watch shipped to them so they could investigate, but I haven't seen any updates on the issue.

Same issue here. Contacting Garmin Spain to request an RMA.
First answer is to hard reset the unit then reinstall latest software via garminwebupdater. Did not work.

Finally Garmin has replaced the watch in only two days, no cost at all for me. Great warranty service! I have a new unit after one year and a half using my old 235 and of course, the problem is solved. It was clearly a hardware issue, otherwise Garmin would not have done a replacement.

Have a slight variation on the problems above. I turned my heart rate monitor OFF through settings as I don't want to use it. I go for a run and it is off and that's fine. After the watch is then put on charge overnight and I go out for a run the next day, the heart rate monitor has somehow turned itself back to AUTO. Is there a way to 'permanently' turn off the heart rate monitor or do I need to turn it off before each activity (really hope not).
