How to downgrade firmware?

I would like to downgrade to 5.40, which was perfect for all my needs. Is there a way to downgrade? I have downloaded older firmwares and the garmin webupdater, however none of the methods I searched online can actually downgrade from 6.30. The *.GCD file always got deleted after reset. I am wondering if there's a trick to either put the watch in some mode that we can force flash, or fool the existing firmware to accept another firmware? Thanks!
  • Make sure you're renaming the file to gupdate.gcd and copying it to the Garmin folder on your watch.
No need to reset the watch. It should prompt you there's a new version to install once you unplug it from the computer.

Note you're going to lose all your settings.
Also, why do you want to downgrade the FW?

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you brick your watch... :)
  • What does work on the latest firmware? In my opinion its better to fix issues with the current firmware than downgrade as that too has it's own bugs.

Thanks but that doesn't work. It looks like recent firmwares cannot be downgraded.
After upgrading to 6.30, it has crashed a couple of times. And that annoying "updating" message. It's a non-operative event doesn't require end user attention.
