Cadence is completely off with Scosche Rhythm+ and Forerunner 235

I've been enjoying my 235 for all the summer, coming from a 225, and never had any issue.

Switching to winter clothes, I've started using a Scosche Rhythm+ to read the heart rate, so I can keep my watch on top of gloves/long sleeves.

The problem is that now my cadence is completely off: I moved from a constant cadence across the run (185-190), to completely random values. Most of the run is around 90-95, with very quick peaks at 185-190. The average cadence for my last run this morning was 100 (range 90-196), my last run with the strap two weeks ago was 187 (range 124-192).

It doesn't make any sense, given that the Scosche Rhythm+ doesn't have a cadence sensor. I tried removing the sensor, and making sure it's associated as heartrate strap, but it didn't change the behavior.

Any advice? It sounds like a bug in the 235, and I wonder if anyone else tried using it with a Scosche Rhythm+

Maybe its the padding of the watch over your clothes? weaker defined contact for the watch?
  • I'm using the same combo, but never had issues with cadence. I keep the watch rather tight on my forearm, so that it doesn't move around.

I assumed that was the problem too, so the last time I made sure that the watch was closed pretty tight. I guess I'll try again a few times, and try wearing it on the skin for a test.

    Thanks for the reply.

Did another run this morning, halfway I turned off the strap and removed it, without touching the watch. Cadence was completely off also during the second half of the run, and the watch was closed tightly.

At this point I need to try a run without the sensor even associated. If that doesn't work, something is wrong with the cadence sensor in my watch (steps seem to be counted just fine).
  • Hard to see how cadence is effected by an external HRM which, as you say, cannot measure cadence.

So if you run without the Scosche and just use the watch's OHR you still get bad cadence?

If so that points to a defective watch so suggest seeking a warranty replacement.

Cadence always worked until I started pairing the Scosche, and it's kind of hard to believe it's a coincidence. It might simply be a bug that prevents cadence to be tracked correctly when the strap is connected, but since other people use them together, it seems unlikely.

I'll definitely get in touch with Garmin if it fails even after removing the sensor pairing (will try this week).

Just to give you an idea, these two readings/runs are 8 days apart:

Did another run this morning, it's not the strap.

First half wearing the watch on the left arm, both on the outside and inside, cadence is off.

Second half wearing it on the inside of my right arm, where I usually wear it in the summer for better HR reading, and the cadence is back to normal.

Not sure if it's the watch or my left arm at this point…
