Firmware v5.20 user discussion / feedback

The release announcement for firmware version 5.20 certainly makes this sound like a compelling update:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.20:

  • Added support for Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
  • Added support for broadcasting optical heart rate over ANT to other devices during an activity.
  • Added support for phone apps to subscribe for more frequent data updates.
  • Added support for Apple Media Service - users can now control any active music player, e.g. Spotify, as well as volume (requires iOS 8.0 and higher).
  • Fixed an issue in which text on some Connect IQ watch faces may not display correctly.
  • Several improvements to optical heart rate.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

I'd managed to hold off updating to firmware v4.70 (from v4.60) for many weeks – after transferring the firmware file to my watch but dismissed the update manually – after seeing all the reports of issues, especially around garbled notifications, but the other night the watch somehow got updated to v4.70 anyway. I might as well take the leap and go to v5.20, now that it appears in Garmin Express for me several minutes ago.

Who else is game? :)
  • To be honest, it really amazes me they manage to release firmwares with such big issues.

There was just about nothing wrong with pace, why screw around with it and more importantly. How can this pass internal testing?!

The issue is pretty damn obvious and it's alsno not the first time where things go wrong. At least release it as a beta or something. And while ohr can vary between users, which makes the ideal solution a lot harder, pace is pretty objective right? Really, unpleasantly, surprised.

Then again, Garmin is of course a company with little resources and relatively new to this market so I guess they will get better with more experience. /Sarcasm off

Calories at rest increased with 5.2

When I take a look at the calories details I see that with 5.2 the calories at rest increased from 1746 to 2130. The problem is that when I calculate the active calories on my FR 235 watch face I get wrong results because the watch calculates with 2130 for the calories at rest where I use the Mifflin-St. Jeor formula which gives me around 1740 for the calories at rest.
Is there any explanation why the calories at rest increased with the firmware update?

We have received word from the software teams that they have identified the root cause of the erratic pace issue, and have indicated that they are working on getting the fix released to production. Unfortunately, I do not have an exact time frame, but the team has indicated that they plan to release the fix as soon as possible.

Just wanted to give everyone an update with the information that has been provided to us.

Thank you again for the discussion, and we do apologize for the inconvenience.

I was able to revert back after my watch updated to 5.20 on it's own...

I understand all Forerunners are now using BMR + 20% which looks like the difference for you.

Thanks hoss, can't wait to check it out tonight! Really appreciate the fast turnaround time.
  • Actually very quick turnaround from Garmin!

I just installed the update without issue. I already did my run for today and tomorrow is a rest day for me. I'll have to wait until Friday to test it.

Yep - went for an interval run on 5.40, and can confirm that the pace issue is 100% fixed.

    Faith in Garmin restored!
