Firmware v5.20 user discussion / feedback

The release announcement for firmware version 5.20 certainly makes this sound like a compelling update:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.20:

  • Added support for Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
  • Added support for broadcasting optical heart rate over ANT to other devices during an activity.
  • Added support for phone apps to subscribe for more frequent data updates.
  • Added support for Apple Media Service - users can now control any active music player, e.g. Spotify, as well as volume (requires iOS 8.0 and higher).
  • Fixed an issue in which text on some Connect IQ watch faces may not display correctly.
  • Several improvements to optical heart rate.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

I'd managed to hold off updating to firmware v4.70 (from v4.60) for many weeks – after transferring the firmware file to my watch but dismissed the update manually – after seeing all the reports of issues, especially around garbled notifications, but the other night the watch somehow got updated to v4.70 anyway. I might as well take the leap and go to v5.20, now that it appears in Garmin Express for me several minutes ago.

Who else is game? :)

What can you see in Settings, Widgets?

Assuming we are discussing in connect mobile under Garmin Device, ConnectIQ Apps > Widgets, the only installed widget is "Default". There is one uninstalled battery widget I used to use. Not sure where else to look. All the regular ones (Virb, Activity track etc) are in that area on my girlfriends phone for her 235.
  • Are we sure this is only an issue with current /instant pace?
I just checked out a run from earlier in garmin connect (android) and the pace graph is seriously spikey.
Compared it to older identical runs and it is much smoother.

I noticed the same thing. Has anyone tried changing tracking from smart to every second and see if the problem still exists? I've already rolled back to 4.7 or I would.

That was with every second and glonass.

Ok, all of a sudden they reappeared. I reordered them back to the way I like them and they disappeared again. Rebooted watch and phone and they have returned. Reordered and they are back to normal. Hmmmmm

    Current Pace/speed

In my opinion avarage pace is also affected by this issue. I run 21k mostly in the forrest and average pace was too low. Keeping the same pace outside of the forest I was much quicer.
I've compared distance to my old FR305 and it was less about 400m. It's 0:05min/km difference.
Firmware 4.70 was not really much better.
With my wife's TomTom Multisport comparison on bike, speed was fluctuating a lot. I was surprised that on TomTom current speed was very stable (on the watch 3 times cheaper).

I have recording set at every second, and I do see the issue (on FR230).

just reverted to firmware 5.07 beta. instance pace and average pace seems a-okay now.
still wish i could roll back to firmware 4.60, that was the best one for me!

    HR data

My heart rate was 45 all day. I think I'm dying.
Absolutely disappointed with this new fw.
No longer believe in the data that my 235 generates.
I hope Garmin fix these problems as soon as possible!!
  • Okay. Did my first outdoor run with the 5.20 firmware and in my experience lap pace was steady and accurate enough but even using the Configurable Pace data field set to average over 30 seconds instant pace had huge swings. The data trace is spikey as hell when I look at it on GC and Strava too.
  • HR is picked up a bit faster when I put in run mode with the new FW. Nothing amazing though. It is still deciding that if I get up my HR must be in the 100s immediately.

I don't use instant pace, and the lap pace is working fine.
