Firmware v5.20 user discussion / feedback

The release announcement for firmware version 5.20 certainly makes this sound like a compelling update:

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.20:

  • Added support for Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
  • Added support for broadcasting optical heart rate over ANT to other devices during an activity.
  • Added support for phone apps to subscribe for more frequent data updates.
  • Added support for Apple Media Service - users can now control any active music player, e.g. Spotify, as well as volume (requires iOS 8.0 and higher).
  • Fixed an issue in which text on some Connect IQ watch faces may not display correctly.
  • Several improvements to optical heart rate.
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

I'd managed to hold off updating to firmware v4.70 (from v4.60) for many weeks – after transferring the firmware file to my watch but dismissed the update manually – after seeing all the reports of issues, especially around garbled notifications, but the other night the watch somehow got updated to v4.70 anyway. I might as well take the leap and go to v5.20, now that it appears in Garmin Express for me several minutes ago.

Who else is game? :)
  • …and even now, the desired functional outcome as described could be easily achieved, by using an external HRM such as a Wahoo TICKR chest strap.

Haha, true, i actually bought a wahoo tickr run for this reason. But i can't deny that it annoyed me to have to buy a chest strap again.......

I've just installed the update, and wanted to go check whether it messed with my Sounds/Vibration settings under System. Having pressed from the watch face, before I even had the chance to go into the menu tree, I got a vibrating toast notification in a matter of seconds advising, “Wrist Heart Rate Ready”. Wow!

Obviously the update and sync did not mess with my Sounds/Vibration settings in the process either.

I updated earlier today. When I select "run" or "bike", I get an immediate "GPS Is Ready" alert. Unfortunately, I can't get a "Wrist Heart Rate Ready" regardless of any activity I select. I first have to go to the Heart Rate widget, wait anywhere from 30-60 seconds before it locks on, and then go to an activity before I get the alert. I've tried several times now with no luck. This is troubling because I was using the beta before I updated to the "official" release and I was receiving the alert within seconds like you.
  • Updated. I did all three (firmware, screen, ANT) at once, and can confirm it wiped my steps for the day, but whatever. It seems the heart rate lock is way better.

I've been running the beta version 5.07 since it was released. I wonder how many differences between 5.07 beta and 5.20 there are.

Too strange. I had great results with beta 5.07, but still can seem to get a lock with 5.20.
  • Have you rebooted the watch since you updated? After i updated, it was acting kind of weird, so I turned it off and on, and now all is well.

I assumed the reboot after the update was all I needed; but I just tried it. It took about 20 secs to get a HR fix when I selected "run". Much better, but not nearly as fast as with beta 5.07. I'll have to keep playing with it and see if it improves. Thanks. I forgot to mention this to you earlier. I too updated all three at once. My steps are still there and I only lost my 4hr HR graph as expected. It's really odd how these updates affect people differently.
  • I didn't have to restart, but I did have to plug it back into my PC to re-sync for the watch to pick up GPS with any kind of speed. It's like it blew away it's GPS map post-update.
  • Setting option no longer available in ConnectIq app after upgrade

Anyone else lost the settings option in their ConnectIQ apps after the upgrade? I no longer see this option in any of the ConnectIQ apps with setting options in my GC mobile.

That happened to me even before I started updating! I just posted about it, creating a new topic.
  • iOS 10 beta

Anyone with iOS 10 beta updates? Can you post your experience? I tried but wasn't really sure, especially with the notifications, they came with different icons and without the app name... Is this fixed with this update? I guess maybe is the way the iPhone send the notifications to the watch...
