Heart Rate Has Stopped Working During Runs

When I start a Run activity with the 235, my heart rate is no longer recorded.

Oddly, my heart rate is tracked fine from the main menu.

But when I start a run, all I see for heart rate is "--".

I just checked and Garmin Express says my software version is up to date (4.70).

The heart rate monitoring worked great for my first 6 or 7 runs but has stopped working for the past few.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

One other data point, I have stopped running with my cell phone for the last few runs. Don't see how this would be connected to the heart rate monitoring but maybe it is.

I have exactly the same problem with my 235 since last update. It isn't a matter of the phone sync while running as I have never run with it. :(

Thanks RunnerRunner. Judging from the forum, seems like we're not the only ones.

    Same issue

My Garmin 235 will read the wrist based HR on about every other run. I can't figure out a pattern. Device firmware and whr versions are up to date. I any suggestions?

[SUB]I have the same problem...optical HR used to work just fine for running workouts but has been very spotty the last few weeks and sometimes it never actually detects a HR and stays on "--"[/SUB]

checking in to say that my HR monitor also isn't turning on. At ALL.
  • I always have great success by getting a lock (heart stops blinking) on the built in HR widget (arrow down once) before I start my run. Once I get a lock, which usually takes less than 30 secs, I start my RUN and have a HR immediately (and throughout the run) ... 100% success when I do this. I never start running now without checking if I have a HR. If I just start a RUN without this little step, I'm almost always missing some or all HR data for my run.

I've mentioned this up here already a time or two and it doesn't seem to work for everyone, but thought I'd say again in case it helps some.

    Max

If you power down then power up the 235 right when you are about to run it will work once.

Garmin deny there is a software problem that could be causing this.

They will offer to send you a new watch which will develop the same symptoms once it is allowed to update itself.

    Sent mine back, same thing

Yes, exactly. I sent my watch back on request and they couldn't reproduce the problem. I thought it was due to a Connect IQ data screen, but it still happens stock.

Yes, you're right. Just ran today with my phone and the heart rate monitor still didn't work. Just got "--" the whole time.
