Sleep detection unusable

I was previously an user of Fitbit Charge. It was flawless in detecting sleep, i.e. when I put it on the table for an hour or so during the day, it never registered this time as sleep. I got accurate readings of nightly sleep. However, 235 has real issues detecting and recording sleep even when "Rest Time" is set from 11:15 till 7:15. For example, I get start of sleep around 9PM, or 10:15, or similar. I must always manually edit start sleep times in Garmin Connect.

Am I doing something wrong or is the sleep detection routine just plain stupid?

I don't have an answer for you but I have also had a similar experience in that my FR235 is quite useless at sleep detection. It does not pick up short sleeps during the day and it does not always accurately identify sleep at night.
  • With the exception on the occasional glitch on OHR I'd say this is really good as a running/cycling watch.
I'd treat anything else as a bonus - 24/7 HRM monitoring, calorie usage, Resting HR, sleep detection - it all just seems like an addon and is buggy as hell IMHO.
That said I've not had any experience of fitbit to know how well it works when done well.

The FR235 may be primarily intended as a runners watch and is expected to offer a lot of functionality and generally excel in that area but lets be realistic, runners and cyclists often also engage in other activities that are part of a fit and healthy lifestyle. Most of us, also intend to only wear one tracker 24x7. This means that the FR needs to be capable of accurately tracking addition activities and stats including RHR, steps and sleep tracking. It makes complete sense for the watch to be capable of tracking these things and it is expected that the tracked metrics are reasonably accurate in order to be meaningful and useful.

As an owner of 4 different trackers, I can tell you that the FR235 tracking of sleep, RHR and even steps could use quite some improvement in the way that they work and their accuracy. (I'm not going to go into detail about how they can be improved because there are already enough threads on this forum with detailed discussions about each item.)

On sleep specifically, I sold my Fitbit Surge before I bough my FR235 thinking that I could use the FR235 as a replacement (didn't do my research before buying) but I found that my Fitbit was much more accurate in detecting sleep and seemed to provide me with more realistic data about the quality of sleep.
  • Yeah, this is a near perfect watch for my needs, with two exceptions:

    1. Give me a notification when I hit my step goal. Just seems like a stupid oversight; why have a goal if you have to manually look to see if you made it or not?
    2. Fix sleep tracking. It's basically broken. I really shouldn't have to put in my typical sleep times to achieve some degree of accuracy... not that it often matters. I have to adjust it continuously.

If they could fix these two things, as well as make the OHR pick up my heart rate faster (I swear it didn't take this much time when I first got the watch), I'd be very happy.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Thanks for the feedback. For now, I will keep the fitbit charge for sleep analysis even though I intended to ditch it and use only one device for fitness/activity tracking.
  • Yea, sleep detection is really bad on this device. It's really the only complaint I have about it's functionality.
