Change in resting HR and Average HR

Hi,

Anyone have the problem where the watch says your resting HR and average HR is a certain figure but when you sync it with Garmin connect it gets changed by over 20 beats per minute different, thanks.
  • Yes it's an issue. There have been quite a few posts about it. I believe a Garmin mod acknowledged the issue somewhere in here.
  • Thanks, the problem still hasn't been resolved, any idea when it will be?
  • I believe the smartphone app is more accurate than the website garmin connect.
    Although its possible neither are.
  • Thanks you were right but why doesn't the Connect website say the same as the app? It makes no sense to me.
  • Good question that I'm assuming only the Garmin developers or support team can answer.

My guess: The watch, website, and mobile app's are all different things and it doesn't appear that they share the same formulas for calculating RHR, or at least they're not keeping them updated together. The watch get's the data (your heart rate), then they all interpret it differently. Even if they get all three in sync, if they roll out an update for the watch to calculate your RHR, but don't update the site or apps, then they'll be showing different numbers. Hopefully they find a way to keep all three in sync better.
  • I'm with KR17 in that I think the phone app is the closest to reality ... the Resting HR displayed on the phone app is almost exactly the same as when I wake up in the morning and check my HR (still in bed). The RHR when I am sitting on the couch mid-evening (snacking, having a beer and whatever) seems to match closer to what the watch says. That leaves the question ... how is Resting Heart Rate really defined? For me, I think it is at TOTAL rest but still awake, thus I tend to believe the number I see first thing in the morning (in bed, but not sleeping).

    Max
  • I raised a support call with Garmin over this. I linked them to the original thread where this was discussed in some detail, and also told them they could see it clearly if they looked at my carming connect accounts. I requested quite specifically that I'd given a decent level of detail and wouldn't appreciate a stock answer about hard reseting or upgrading firmware.

They took a week to reply, and requested screenshots. I send them.

They then took another week, to reply with a stock email saying my issue could be fixed in one of 2 ways. Hard reset and upgrading firmware.

    Complete waste of time.

    Usual Sloppy Software

As of 16:30 local time, this is what I had to choose from if I wanted to know my resting heart rate for today:

    SOURCE———SCREEN—————–INFORMATION

    Device Display–Heart Rate—————Avg. Resting 55
    ———————Last 4 Hours————Low 48

    iPhone App——All Day Heart Rate—–Resting 50
    ———————Heart Rate Details—–Resting 47

    Android App—–All Day Heart Rate—–Resting 57
    ———————All Day Heart Rate—–Jul 30, 2016 47 BPM – 175 BPM
    ———————Heart Rate Details—–Resting 47

    Web App———-DAILY SUMMARY——Avg Resting Heart Rate 57
    ———————DAILY SUMMARY——Resting Heart Rate56
    ———————DAILY SUMMARY——Interactive Graph Low47
———————DAILY SUMMARY——Resting Heart Rate Trends Over Time link 56

Is any one in Kansas even paying attention to this?
  • Another data point!?!?!

Noticed something interesting (helpful?) - there is yet another means to track Resting Heart Rate , possibly the true/only method provided by Garmin....

If you are using the phone app... select /// Health Stats / All Day Heart Rate... then select the time frame (7d, 4w, 12m).... then select at the top right 'HELP' .... there it explains HR, and gives a low (resting) and a typical high.

For me.... that is much much closer to true totally resting HR - of 43-45 depending on period.... whereas my "Resting" shown on the All Day Heart Rate page under Averages...shows 53-60 depending on the time frame.

When I press the watch button and watch my heart rate over the course of a couple presses... if I am super chill it gets to 49-44....yet my reported resting will often say 52 to even 60??? yet it almost always shows periods of much lower then that in my graphs... my resting heart rate on the watch and app used to be much closer back with older firmware, 4.7 seems like thats when it changed.

Ha! Another algorithm for Garmin to try and reconcile the RHR with all the other different places.
