FR230 custom workouts on a track

There must be a better way!

I've created a workout (warmup, 5x800s with 400m recovery, cooldown) through Garmin Connect, sent it to my watch via Garmin Express, it appears under "My Workouts" -- all is good.

But how do I actually use the watch to do a workout on an actual track??? So far the best way I've managed is using "press lap button" to change from warmup to first 800, and then again for the recovery, and then again for the second 800, and so on. Great! In theory.

On the track however, there's usually a few seconds (or minutes, if I have to pee or stretch something) between the recovery and when I actually start running the next 800. What's the best way to handle this? I don't think pressing pause and then stretch, and then when I start the next 800 quickly unpause and press the lap button is going to work. At least it's not going to be accurate. I suppose a compromise would be just including potty time and stretching in the recovery, since I don't really care about my time/pace for that, though it would be nice to know if/when I get super tired and my recovery pace increases.

It seems soooo obvious, so instead I mess up the custom workout by pressing some wrong button every time. Ahhhh!!

Please tell me there's a better way.

Thanks!
  • Add an extra step in the program, after the 400m recovery; make that step neither distance nor time based, but based on "Press Lap Button" (it's one of the options in the drop-down for any step you create). This way you will do your 800, then the program will proceed to a 400m recovery, after which it will fall into a step that will last until you hit the Lap button. It will still be recording during this 'suspended' step. You can pause the recording as needed (unless you want to know your HR while you pee...), un-pause it as needed, line up for your next 800, and hit the Lap button to start it. Repeat as needed.
