No VO2Max data

I'm still conversing with customer support on this, but I'm puzzled. I was hoping to track my VO2Max estimate.

My 230 has never shown any VO2Max data, even though it tracks my HR just fine. I'm using the chest strap that came with the watch.
I'm not in great shape but I'd still expect a VO2max number. I've had at least a dozen runs over 25 minutes outside with GPS on.

Most of this watch's features work well, although the buttons and menus could use improvement. Treadmill and GPS distance measurements are great.

I'm getting close to returning this device. Could there be a physiological reason why it isn't showing VO2max?

Thanks for any suggestions.
  • Do you have a max heart rate set? Also what sort of TE scores are you getting? Are they all 1.0 or 5.0?

    CW
  • Yes agree with CW on those questions Also, if you can post some example GC links we might be able to see what's going wrong.

    230 & VO2max

My max HR is set to 185. I think that is reasonable based on the actual HR range I see when I'm running. (I am assuming that the chest strap is reporting accurately.)

Here is a run from about a week ago: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1241140222

I don't know where to look for TE score - is that supported by the FR 230?

[update - I see on the mobile app, on the charts page, Training Effect. I have values, depending on the workout, from 2.5 to 4.5]

    Thanks for your help!

    VO2Max

Hi. I thought I replied but it seems to have gone missing.
    Here is a recent workout.
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1241140222
On the app detailed info page for that run I see a Training Effect of 4.5

    Still no data

I spoke to customer service last week, they looked at my workout data online, and decided to send me a replacement watch.
That watch is also unable to produce a VO2Max score.

Here's my last (short and slow) run, in which I aimed to keep my heart rate below 160.
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1263544848

Is there something wrong with me?

I'm separately looking at the HRV4Training app to see if my Heart rate variability is normal.
  • Which HRM are you using? Is it a Garmin one?

No offence intended but this thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?91743-What-are-your-FR620-VO2-max-estimates-race-prediction-times where a table was drawn up of race predictions from VO2 Max values suggest your pace is towards the lower end of the scale. That might be a factor in where the algorithm works here.

using the hear rate monitor that came with the watch

(ha ha no offense taken... my running shape is poor right now - I have 9 marathons under 4:00 so I do know how far I have declined, however I suspect improper training over the past year - only short runs at max HR. That is why I purchased this watch - to monitor my recovery through this awkward period)

This is the heart rate monitor that came with the watch, which I purchased from Road Runner Sports.

Is sounds like you're suggesting that the VO2Max prediction would turn out to be too low to calculate from the HRV data...

  • My wife is way out of shape and her 230 calculates the VO2max.
Did you set the activity class under user settings? (I'm not sure if that influences the calculation but it's worth a try)

    suspecting overtraining or other issues

Interesting question, and thanks for the comment. My activity class has been set to 5.

Based on my past few years of pace history and running habits I have suspected overtraining or related issues. (resting pulse increased from 40 to 60 in the past year) - It's a long story.

I started tracking my HRV with HRV4Training (the app) and I see strange results - rMSSD between 180 and 300 for example).

    Thinking about a Dr. visit...
  • I have a 235 and two weeks ago I ran a marathon in the trail so my pace was way lower than my road pace.
Interesting enough my VO2Max didn't get calculated and remained the same as it was before (49).
There was once when I did a training run of 10Kish in the mountain and that time it calculated but it was really low (because of the pacing).
So, it seems to me that these calculations happen when the stars are aligned. I don't know exactly which variables are involved at the same time so that it would happen.

Maybe you could try some steady runs of 1 hour or so?
